"Many Threads, One Cloth," a fiber arts exhibit, is now open to public viewing at the Atrium Gallery of Second Christian Reformed Church, 2021 Sheldon Road.
Most of the featured artists are from the Grand Haven area. Their works demonstrate a wide variety of styles and materials.
Nancy Boonstra weaves wearable art. Referring to her elegant scarves, she says, "I make textiles because I love the rhythm of repetition and pattern."
Ken Foster, a retired teacher and well-known ceramist, often accentuates his sculptures with protruding or woven rope, wire and electrical cord and cables.
The late Libby Crawford is represented with three of her last works, including an 18-foot-long landscape commissioned by the late Barbara Sherwood, now property of the Tri-Cities Historical Museum.
Karen Hoekstra's discovery of tapestry some 30 years ago was her entry into the world of textiles, with which she has produced numerous weavings. Shown in the exhibit are examples of her earlier works, as well as more recent ones, in which she combines drawing with sewing, using thread as her drawing tool.
Ann Willey uses media paintings and rug hookings to convey themes of family, nurturing, memories, and connectedness with animals and the natural world.
A reception for the artists and a gallery walk is planned for Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at 11 a.m. The exhibit runs through Feb. 14. Gallery hours are Sunday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Friday till noon. Special arrangements for off-hour visits can be made by calling the church office at 842-0710.
