GH, WMC volleyball teams each place 2nd

Grand Haven placed third at Saturday's East Kentwood Invitational, falling to the host Falcons in the semifinal round.

The Bucs breezed through pool play with wins over Grand Rapids Northview (25-22, 25-12), Hamilton (25-12, 25-23) and Lake Odessa Lakewood (16-25, 25-11, 25-9) before topping Hudsonville in the quarterfinals (25-23, 25-22).

In the semifinals, East Kentwood edged Grand Haven, 25-18, 25-19.

Alexa Weisgerber paced the Bucs with 37 assists while Alyssa VanderStel added 35 assists to go with 18 digs.

Robyn Power had 66 digs to go with three aces, while Kristen Reenders contributed with 51 digs, 19 kills and four blocks.

Mindy Marx and Emily Franks each had 34 kills. Marx added 15 blocks while Kristen Wood had 19 kills and eight blocks.

Laura Kooistra had 27 digs for the Bucs.

Freshmen: Grand Haven placed second at Saturday's Reeths-Puffer Invitational on Saturday. After sweeping through pool play, the Bucs defeated North Muskegon and Grand Rapids West Catholic in the quarterfinals and semifinals. The Bucs then fell to Hudsonville, 21-12, 21-19, in the finals. Kaitlin Smith had 12 assists, a block, two kills and seven aces for the Bucs. Natalie Toth added 15 assists, six aces and two kills, while Stephanie Hoover finished with five kills and three blocks. Stephanie Sedwick provided 10 kills, six aces and two blocks, while Abby Styck had five digs, five kills and five digs.

WMC PLACES 2ND

Western Michigan Christian placed second in the Holton Invitational on Saturday, coming up just short against Shelby in the championship match.

The Warriors defeated Shelby earlier in the day, 25-18, 19-25, 15-10, but fell short to the Tigers in the finals, 25-20, 25-18.

WMC also beat Oakridge and Walkerville before topping Hesperia in the semifinals, 25-19, 25-21.

Erin Knochenhauer had 10 aces, 22 kills and 46 digs for the Warriors, while Lauren Merz added 56 digs, 25 kills and two blocks. Anne VanRees had 44 assists, 27 kills and three blocks, while Victoria Arangure added 40 assists and six aces.

Rachel Bruinsma chipped in with eight aces, and Elyse Ray provided three blocks.
