Golf roundup: Bucs catch 'Cats

Grand Haven's golfers knocked off Jenison Wednesday thanks to an even-par round of 37 turned in by junior Nolan McBride.

Ryan Davidson added a 39, Ian Foltz shot a 41, and Brad Christiansen and Ian Karafa both shot a 44 for the Buccaneers for a team score of 161.

Jenison finished with a 172 on its home course, The Meadows.

"It was great to bring home a win," said Buccaneer coach Randy White. "I think we were inspired by two past Grand Haven team members and now collegiate players."

Former Buccaneer Raquel Hansen led the Ferris State golf team to a second-place finish at the NCAA Division II womens' regional tournament earlier Wednesday at The Meadows. The Bulldogs qualified for the national tournament as Hansen shot a 233 in the three-day event, finishing second overall.

Also on the course Wednesday was former Buc Garrett Smith, who recently qualified for the Division III national tournament with the Muskegon Community College golf team. He was out to cheer on the Bucs.

"I love seeing the success of these players and their encouragement to our high school guys," White said. "We wish them both success in their upcoming events and will be cheering for them as they represent their schools."

LAKERS 2ND

Spring Lake finished second in the final Lakes Eight Conference golf standings after Wednesday's final league jamboree at Terra Verde Golf Course.

Ludington won the event Wednesday with an amazing round of 144, which is even-par on the front nine at Terra Verde. The Lakers were next with a 155.

The Orioles' top golfer came in with a five-under-par 31.

"I've been doing this for 44 seasons, and I've never seen a 31 on a card," said Lakers' coach George Bitner.

In the final standings, the Orioles finished with 622 strokes, ahead of Spring Lake (661) and Fremont (689). Orchard View (731), Fruitport (735), Newaygo (801), Tri-County (804) and Grant (916) rounded out the final league standings.

Steve Westerburg shot a 37 for the Lakers, while Danny Knape carded a 38 and Landon King shot a 49. David Bonter added a 41, and Will Crane shot a 42.

Westerburg, Knape, Bonter and King all finished as all-conference performers for Spring Lake while Crane and Alan Marine were honorable mention.

JOHNSON SHOOTS 33

Two Western Michigan Christian golfers made par or better at Old Channel Trail Golf Club Wednesday to lead the Warriors to victory.

WMC fired a 155, good for first place. Warrior Caleb Johnson was match medalist with a three-under-par 33 while teammate Collin Breit carded an even-par 36. Chris Wisen added a 41 and Daniel Rosema a 45 for WMC.

Montague was second with a 165, followed by Shelby at 167 and Muskegon Catholic at 188.
