Kanzeon was founded by D. Merzel Roshi in the Japanese soto zen tradition. White Sands Zen Center is Kanzeon's first affiliate east of the Mississippi River, and only the second in the continental United States. Kanzeon has affiliates in Idaho, Hawaii and Europe.
Taido Sensei will become the first White Sands teacher at its official opening on Friday and Saturday, conducting the "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" spring retreat.
"Having Kanzeon endorse an affiliate Zen center in West Michigan is a dream come true for the growing number of Zen practitioners seeking to be involved in a vital and radically inclusive community dedicated to a 2,500-year-old practice of meditation and learning," said Wayne Johnson, chairman of the White Sands Board of Directors.
