White River Light group hosts dinner July 24

Fri, Jul 18, 2008    to del.icio.us

WHITEHALL — The Friends of the White River Light Station will host an evening with Great Lakes historical interpreter Michael Deren during the group's annual meeting on Thursday, July 24, at 5:30 p.m.

The public is invited to join this event. It will be held at the Wabaningo Club on Murray Road in Whitehall.

Deren will present his interpretive and interactive program about a schooner captain, Bill Thomas, who sailed the Great Lakes. The audience will learn about the beaver, lumber, iron, copper and fishing industries that made Michigan what it is today.

Deren will use a button accordion and concertina to share songs, history and resources of the Great Lakes.

The program, "The Past in Person," will start at 7 p.m. It will be followed by a live auction. The evening will also include a light supper.

The cost is $20 per person.

To make reservations, call Betsy Grein at (231) 894-4926 or by e-mail her at tbgrein1@verizon.net.

The Friends of the White River Light Station is a nonprofit organization that purchases artifacts for the lighthouse museum, provides group tours and funds other education programs.
