'Book of Job' comes to life in Douglas April 27

DOUGLAS — Byzantine mosaics come to life April 27 in the Grand Rapids Master Arts Theatre's production of "The Book of Job."

The Community Church of Douglas, 6780 Wiley Road, will host this evening of entertainment beginning at 6.

"The Book of Job" is both poetry and theological argument, and asks, "Where is God?" and "Why do the innocent suffer?" To voice the message, mankind's oldest dramatic device is used — the speaking chorus of ancient Greece. Not only do the players portray Job and his friends, they also work together as a chorus propelling and reflecting upon the action, thought and dialogue. The makeup and gleaming, jewel-like costumes worn by the performers create moving mosaics.

This is not a play, in the usual sense, but a dramatic orchestration of an inspiring message.

Adapted by Orlin and Irene Corey, and directed by Pris McDonald, "The Book of Job" was a 2007 Michigan State Play Festival prize-winning production, and continues to tour with Job's story of hope.

The evening will also feature an art exhibit from the works of Bill Olendorf. His art has been exhibited around the world, and can be found in some of the most prestigious public and private collections, including the White House.

A meet-the-cast dessert reception will follow the night's festivities.
