Police: Woman, 22, left newborn in trash bin

Thu, Dec 3, 2009    to del.icio.us

GARDEN CITY (AP) — A 22-year-old Garden City woman, who authorities say gave birth to a baby girl and left her in a trash bin, faces an attempted murder charge.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Desiree A. Walker also is charged with child abandonment and second-degree child abuse.

District Judge Richard Hammer set Walker's bond at $100,000 at her arraignment Wednesday.

Walker could be sentenced to up to life in prison if convicted of the attempted murder charge.

Investigators said a group of teenage girls discovered the 7-pound 4-ounce infant about five hours after Walker allegedly abandoned her in the trash bin in Garden City, 15 miles west of downtown Detroit. The infant survived and Worthy said she is in good condition.
