The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department has begun a campaign to collect used and outdated cell phones to benefit victims of abuse and seniors.
The department has partnered with a 911 cell phone bank to collect the phones. The phones will be refurbished strictly for 911 calls and distributed to seniors and abuse victims, Sgt. Valerie Weiss said. The program reduces the number of phones that wind up in landfills in addition to benefiting those who receive them, she said.
"The phones become a lifeline for members of the community who have a need for them in an emergency situation," Weiss said.
Phones can be dropped off at the Sheriff's Department, 12220 Fillmore St.; any township hall in Ottawa County; or the Coopersville and Hudsonville city halls during regular business hours Monday through Friday.
