With six state-ranked teams competing in Thursday's Division 3 regional golf meet at the Highlands Golf Course in Kenowa Hills, it would stand to figure a fairly low score would take home the regional championship.
But with brutal greens driving the scores up through the roof, the host Knights took home first place with a 390. They were the only team to break 400.
Spring Lake shot one of its worst scores of the year to take eighth place with a total of 439 strokes as all four Lakers' scorers shot over 100.
"Those greens were so brutal," said Lakers' longtime coach George Bitner. "It was windy, and maybe that helped dry out the fast greens. We sure hit a wall, and we had a lot of company. I've never been in any tournament that's had that high of scores from decent schools."
Spring Lake's Emily Rosencrants, who qualified individually for the state meet a year ago, struggled to a 102 and missed making the cut for the state finals by nine strokes.
Kerry Ryan added a 107 for the Lakers. Breanna Striker shot a 113, and Jaime Rosema carded a 117.
Spring Lake wrapped up a fantastic season in which the Lakers won the Lakes Eight Conference title and finished with a 10-1 mark in head-to-head matches.
