(WITH VIDEO) Locals celebrated Red Nose Day on Thursday with a variety of activities. Walgreens held a celebration in their parking lot. The Spring Lake schools' Transportation Department also took part. Red Nose Day is an event that started in Britain in 1988 to raise money for poverty-stricken children.
Emergency units from Ottawa and Muskegon counties, as well as the Michigan Army National Guard 51st Civil Support Team participated in a hazardous materials training exercise Tuesday and Wednesday in Grand Haven. Field activities were held at Waterfront Stadium, Harbor Island and on the Grand River.
(WITH VIDEO) A group of St. Mary's School eighth-graders had various "toppings" poured over them for a fundraiser. With every $25 a classroom donated, they earned a "topping" to pour onto an eighth-grader. The school raised about $1,800 for Jim Murphy, who travels to Mexico to help people in struggling areas.
Police officers from several area departments gathered at the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department Friday afternoon for a memorial service and monument dedication ceremony at the Fillmore Complex. Three officers who died in the line of duty were honored: Scott Flahive, Trevor Slot and Arlan Gort.
The Tri-Cities Area Habitat for Humanity celebrated its 25th anniversary on Thursday night during an event at Porto Bello in Grand Haven. The event honored the group's founders and the work the organization has done to provide more than 50 homes in the community.
