A 50-year-old Holton man will spend up to 25 years in prison for robbing a Ferrysburg convenience store at gunpoint on Aug. 1. Jon Lee DeJong, 8816 Holton Road, was sentenced Monday morning by Ottawa County Circuit Judge Jon Hulsing. DeJong was ordered to serve between 12 and 25 years on the armed robbery charge, and 2-5 years for fleeing and eluding a police officer. An habitual offender charge had been dropped in exchange for the guilty plea on Aug. 15.

A report of a possible missing boater on Sunday turned out to be unfounded, according to an official at Coast Guard Station Grand Haven. The Coast Guard was notified about 7:45 p.m. Sunday that there was a boat anchored in the Grand River in the area of 144th Avenue and Mercury Drive, near the Odawa boat launch in Grand Haven Township. The caller reported there was nobody around the boat, the official said.

A car loaded with eight Norwich University students lost control and crashed after an off-campus party early Sunday, killing a freshman and leaving three others with critical injuries, police said. The 22-year-old behind the wheel is charged with drunken driving resulting in a fatality. Renee Robbins, 18, of Kentwood, Mich., died in the crash just after 1 a.m., Northfield police said. Seven people in the car required hospital treatment.

Two Grand Rapids-area men were taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia after their fishing boat swamped in Lake Macatawa and they had to swim to shore, said Sgt. Keith Garvelink of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Terrance Mullenix, 39, of Wyoming; and Brett James, 32, of Grand Rapids, went fishing in a 16-foot fiberglass boat about 5 p.m. Friday, Garvelink said. The boat started taking on water when the men were about 200 yards south of the Anchorage Marina on the north side of the lake.

A Jenison man was seriously injured after crashing his car into a parked truck early Saturday morning, according to Sgt. Keith Garvelink of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Elijah Robert Bouwens, 26, was driving west on Baldwin near Mill Street when his Mini-Cooper crossed the turn lanes and two eastbound lanes of traffic, before leaving the road and hitting a Freightliner semitrailer truck parked on private property. Bouwens was taken by ambulance to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The range at a local gun club is closed while police investigate a report of a shooting victim in a nearby subdivision. Officials from the North Ottawa Rod & Gun Club, 13084 160th Ave., released a statement Friday afternoon saying their shooting range was closed "until further notice' pending the investigation. No further comment would be given at this time, the statement said.

Police recovered about $59,000 stolen from a Grand Rapids-area bank and tossed from the window of a getaway rental truck this week. An additional $16,000 - snatched up by passers-by before officers could collect it - could not be found, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday in federal court in Grand Rapids. Adam Jones and his wife, Tammy Jo Jones, were named as suspects in the complaint. They were reported to have been arraigned Thursday in Kent County Circuit Court.

Two people are dead after the driver of an sport utility vehicle hydro-planed and crashed the vehicle into a house south of Holland on Thursday night. It happened around 6:30 p.m. on 146th Avenue in Fillmore Township of Allegan County. The crash did extensive damage to the house, police said. The homeowners said they were away celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary when the crash happened.

Police in Grand Rapids said a suspected drunken driver jumped into the Grand River to avoid capture and was fished out after about 45 minutes early today. Police said the man collided with an off-duty officer's cruiser, then ran away and jumped into the water near the fish ladder at the Sixth Street Dam. He got soaked while staying on the fish ladder, and was eventually pulled to safety by rescuers.

A 25-year-old Battle Creek man has been charged with murder in this summer's death of a 3-year-old girl who was in his care. The Battle Creek Enquirer reported police were looking for Leo Ackley. He's charged with open murder and first-degree child abuse in the death of Baylee Stenman. Baylee died Aug. 1 at a hospital in Kalamazoo after being found unresponsive July 28. Charges were announced this week by Calhoun County prosecutors after autopsy results showed the child died from head trauma.
