Nonaggravated assault charges have been dropped against Western Michigan Christian High School varsity boys basketball coach and physical education teacher Jim Goorman. According to a report by the Norton Shores Police Department, Goorman was accused of shoving a female student in the back with his foot during gym class on March 17. Charges were never filed, and the two parties reached an out-of-court agreement when the Muskegon girl and her family decided they did not want to press charges, according to the police report.

Authorities said two 25-year-old Illinois men drowned in separate incidents in Michigan waters over the Labor Day weekend. Police in New Buffalo said Wojciech Sadowski of Palos Hills, Ill., and a friend were swimming in stormy Lake Michigan on Sunday when they got in trouble. The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reported the friend managed to cling to a swimming zone buoy, where a lifeguard rescued him. Police said the 6-foot waves prevented local authorities from using their rescue boats, so a 47-foot U.S. Coast Guard boat responded.

Authorities in suburban Detroit said they've arrested a man who is charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl who became pregnant and recently gave birth. The Macomb County Sheriff's Department said 28-year-old Trevaun Brooks of Mount Clemens was found Monday evening at a home in the nearby community of Warren. Brooks is charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct. He was expected in court today. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said Friday that Brooks was supposed to talk to investigators last week, but did not appear.

An Ottawa County man helped save another person from a house fire Saturday night. The fire happened in the 9000 block of Four Winds Lane in Olive Township. A neighbor noticed smoke coming from the home of Scott Pierce, 42. When they couldn't make contact, Kevin Lothschutz went into the burning building - and, with the help of friends, saved Pierce from the fire. Pierce was hospitalized in critical condition because of burns and smoke inhalation. Lothschutz suffered minor injuries.

A Wyoming, Mich. man was hurt in a water skiing accident late this afternoon on Lloyd's Bayou, northeast of Leonard Road. Richard Ponstein, 51, was slalom skiing behind a personal water craft shortly after 4 p.m. when he dropped the ski in order to ski barefooted, said Sgt. Bob Ruster of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. The ski flipped up and hit him in the head, stunning him, Ruster said.

Authorities are investigating the suspicious death of a woman near the end of her pregnancy whose body was found in Saginaw County. Officials haven't released the victim's name, but the owner of an industrial supply company told The Saginaw News that she was one of his employees. Jim Terry owns P.F. Markey Inc., and he said Jenny Webb of Bridgeport Township Webb was increasingly excited about the impending birth of her first child, who was due within a month.

A Muskegon man is facing charges including stalking and assault for breaking into a woman's home in Spring Lake Township. William Henry Nelson, 22, was arraigned by video in 58th District Court in Grand Haven on Thursday on charges of first-degree home invasion, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, aggravated stalking and larceny in a building.

Three people were sent to a Grand Rapids hospital after the golf cart they were riding was struck by a car Thursday afternoon. Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said the incident occurred at 1 p.m. at the intersection of Baldwin Street and Bluebird in Georgetown Township. According to Austin, 33-year-old Stacy West of Jenison was driving the 2009 golf cart east on Baldwin Street, and attempted to turn left onto Bluebird when she was struck by a 2003 Nissan driven by Kathryn Dorsey, 28, of Grand Rapids. Dorsey was driving west on Baldwin.
