A Detroit-area pharmacist who controls more than 20 Michigan pharmacies conspired with doctors and others to illegally bill the government for painkiller prescriptions worth millions, according to an indictment unsealed Tuesday. Babubhai "Bob' Patel of Canton Township was among 26 people, including four doctors, indicted in a scheme to reap millions from Medicaid and the government's five-year-old Medicare drug program.

A 50-year-old Holton man, arrested following the armed robbery of a Ferrysburg convenience store on Saturday, demanded preliminary examination when he was arraigned by video late Monday afternoon in Ottawa County's 58th District Court. Bond was set at $250,000 for John Lee DeJong, after he was charged with armed robbery and fleeing a police officer. Joe Legatz will serve as DeJong's court-appointed attorney. A charge of operating under the influence of drugs is still pending the return of a blood test, Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Chief Roger DeYoung said.

Authorities said part of a man's arm was severed by a boat's propeller while he and his son were tubing Monday on Sanford Lake in Midland County. WNEM-TV reported the man was taken to a hospital for treatment following the midday accident at the lake. A Midland County Sheriff's Department dive team searched the lake for the arm for several hours Monday without success. The accident happened near Sanford Lake Park. Authorities said waves pushed the boat toward the man and his son.

Authorities said a boat struck and killed a woman who was swimming off her own anchored boat on Saturday. Hillsdale County Undersheriff William Whorley said the accident happened about 2:40 p.m. in Bear Lake. It's in Cambria Township, about six miles southwest of Hillsdale and about 12 miles north of the Ohio line. According to Whorley, 49-year-old Cynthia Hiszak of Temperance was out boating on the lake with her husband, James. The undersheriff said a boat driven by 48-year-old James Jonassen of Hillsdale struck Hiszak and then the couple's boat.

It took just 45 minutes to gather personnel and trucks from 13 fire departments in Ottawa and Muskegon counties as part of an emergency readiness test staged Thursday afternoon at the Crockery Township Fire Department, said Crockery Township Fire Chief Gary Dreyer. "Throughout the state, they had seven task forces assembled and we had two of them,' Dreyer said. "So we did great.' All of those task forces in the five different regions met the goal of reporting to the staging areas in less than an hour, Dreyer said.

Tri-Cities lunch-hour traffic was backed up for a short time today when a car caught on fire on northbound U.S. 31, north of Jackson Street. Ferrysburg resident Chris Larson said he was driving his 1996 Oldsmobile north on the highway just after noon when he smelled gas. "Before I knew it, the power cut out,' he said. "... I started getting over, rolled over to get out of traffic and started seeing smoke.' The smoke was white, then turned to heavy black, he said. "I grabbed my things and got out of there,' Larson said.

An 81-year-old Holland man has died after falling from a dock into the Black River in South Haven while on a fishing trip. Donald Bohlsen died at a hospital following the Tuesday morning accident. Investigators said they believe Bohlsen suffered a head injury when he fell. Police said a friend jumped into the river and pulled Bohlsen out of the water.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department is looking for assistance in identifying the suspect in at least two-dozen thefts from vehicles in the Georgetown Township area. Lt. Mark Bennett of the Sheriff's Department said they are investigating about 25 incidents of larceny from vehicles over the past few weeks. He said most of the cars broken into were in driveways or on the side of roads, and were not secured. Electronics, cash and wallets were taken from the vehicles, totaling several thousands of dollars in lost property.

A section of Lakeshore Drive, south of M-45, was closed to traffic for about an hour late Wednesday afternoon following a two-car accident in front of 10765 Lakeshore Drive. Four people with minor injuries were taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital following the 4:42 p.m. accident, said Lt. Bruce Palm of the Grand Haven Township Fire Department. One person refused medical treatment. Palm said the car pulled out of a driveway into the path of a southbound sport utility vehicle. No further information was available at this time.
