Charges dropped in case of Allendale woman trying to sell toddler on eBay

The Kent County prosecutor has decided to not charge a 19-year-old Ottawa County woman for listing a child for sale on eBay. Prosecutor William Forsyth said in a news release today: "I have witnessed many otherwise good young people make bad choices that have had regrettable and unintended consequences,' and Autumn Monet Braden of Allendale Township falls into that category.

Prison for ex-union secretary who stole $412,000

The former office secretary for a plumbers union in Lansing has been sentenced to three years, six months in prison for embezzling $412,000 from the union and its apprenticeship and training fund. April D. Franklin, 35, worked for Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 333 between 1999 and 2009. The Mason woman pleaded guilty in May to federal charges of theft from an employee benefit plan and embezzlement of union funds.

Woman found strangled at retirement community

Authorities said an 89-year-old woman found dead last week in a Grand Rapids-area retirement community apartment was strangled. Mary Morrison lived at the Sentinel Pointe Retirement Community in Cascade Township for 12 years. She was found dead July 19, and authorities on Monday met with residents and their families to discuss the case.

Body found along Lake County road identified

Authorities have identified a body found alongside a Lake County road and said the man apparently died of a gunshot wound. The body of 31-year-old Andrew Smith of Big Rapids was found early Saturday along a road near the boundary between Yates and Pleasant Plains townships. The site is about 4 miles southeast of Baldwin. The death was under investigation.

Two hurt in Port Sheldon Township crash

Two Robinson Township residents were taken to Holland Hospital following a two-car accident early Saturday evening at the intersection of Port Sheldon Road and 144th Avenue, said Sgt. Keith Garvelink of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Diana Barriga and Cesar Barrios, both 54, were hospitalized in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, Garvelink said.

Gunman arrested, bartender injured in separate incidents at Holiday Inn

A bartender was injured and a gunman arrested in separate incidents at the Holiday Inn early Saturday morning, according to Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Chief Roger DeYoung. Police were first called to the hotel at 12:20 a.m. when they received a call on an intoxicated man brandishing a firearm. The 36-year-old man from New Carlisle, Ind., was arrested for brandishing a firearm and resisting police, DeYoung said. A preliminary breathalyzer test indicated the man had a blood-alcohol level of 0.25 percent.

Man in serious condition after crash

A Hudsonville man is in serious condition following a two-vehicle accident late Saturday afternoon in Jamestown Township. Steven Dykema, 53, was taken to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids after the 5:24 p.m. collision, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. He suffered a head injury. A passenger in his car Amy Dykema, 42, also of Hudsonville, was in fair condition this morning at Butterworth, a hospital spokesperson said. They were both wearing seat belts.

Police: Man accosts kids, says he’s on reality TV

A 51-year-old man has been arrested after police say he made sexual advances toward children at a Michigan park and told them he was part of a reality TV show. Michigan State Police said the man was being held Friday at the Gratiot County Jail and was expected to face charges of accosting children for immoral purposes. He was arrested Thursday at Reeds Park in North Star Township, about 35 miles north of Lansing. Police said the man told children he had a TV crew with him. Investigators were later told he assaulted a girl while in water at the park.

5th woman reports sexual assault in Ann Arbor

Authorities are investigating a reported fifth attack in a string of sexual assaults in and around downtown Ann Arbor. AnnArbor.com reported Friday that a 26-year-old Ypsilanti woman told police she was attacked late Monday night in a parking structure's elevator. The woman said she came forward after seeing media coverage of the sexual assaults and did not seek medical attention. Police said the sexual assault reports began July 15 and that each of the victims was alone at the time of the attacks.

Accomplice sentenced in death of Venus Stewart

A man accused of being the accomplice in the abduction and slaying of a 32-year-old Michigan woman has been sentenced to a year in jail and three years probation. The Kalamazoo Gazette reported Friday that St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman announced Ricky Spencer's sentence in Centreville. Venus Stewart disappeared in April 2010. Her body has not been found. Stewart's estranged husband, Doug Stewart, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced in April to life in prison.
