Police said a 38-year-old man who was setting off fireworks in a boat overnight apparently drowned after jumping into a lake to try to retrieve a lantern that fell overboard. The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department said several agencies were still trying to find the man's body Monday evening. The victim was identified as Kerry Ulrath of Bangor. Sheriff Dale Gribler said the accident happened about 2 a.m. Monday on Donavan Lake in Bangor Township. It's about 50 miles south-southwest of Grand Rapids.

A 4-year-old Muskegon boy was killed Friday night when the car he was riding in went off the road and hit a tree, according to Michigan State Police. Elijah Wolfenbargen was one of three people taken by ambulance to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, where the boy was pronounced dead due to injuries suffered in the crash, police said. The crash occurred in the area of Sternberg Road near South Hilton Park Road in Muskegon County's Sullivan Township.

A carnival worker was killed early today after coming into contact with a power line in Sand Lake. It happened at a Fourth of July carnival around 3:15 a.m. "The ride was being dismantled at the time,' Sand Lake Police Chief Ken Williams said. "It is still under investigation at this time, but it appears contact was made with an electrical wire.' Police said it's not clear if the power line was down before the accident or because of the accident.

A Grand Rapids woman and four others in her car are all recovering after an accident Sunday afternoon. Police officers in Holland said the 35-year-old woman's car rolled over on westbound Interstate 196 near mile marker 47 around 1 p.m. Besides the driver, a 45-year-old man, two girls ages 12 and 9, and a 14 year old boy were in the car. They were all wearing seatbelts when the crash happened. None of them suffered serious injuries. Police said they were all able to crawl out of the car after the crash.

Two Spring Lake residents safely evacuated their home late Friday morning when a close lightning strike hit a sprinkler system electrical line and started a fire inside their house, Spring Lake Township Fire Chief Rick Nuvill said. Syed Mahmood, 18615 Woodduck Lane, said he was cooking eggs for his daughter at about 11:40 a.m. when there was a big bang and his smoke alarms started sounding. Storms had been rumbling through the area all morning, but this possible lightning strike sounded like it was just outside his house, Mahmood said.

A 40-year-old Grand Haven man reportedly drove off westbound Interstate 96 Thursday night and crashed his car into a wooded area west of Ionia. The man, whose name was not released, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital by ambulance, WOOD-TV reported. According to police reports, the man's car drifted off the interstate and into a ditch, and struck a tree near the 60-mile marker, near Saranac in Ionia County's Boston Township, at about 10 p.m. Police said alcohol and fatigue were factors in the one-car crash, WWMT-TV reported.

Police say 4-month-old Katherine Phillips remains missing, and the man accused of abducting her is refusing to say where the baby is located. Investigators said Thursday that Sean Phillips, 21, had an argument with Katherine's mother, Ariel Courtland, outside her Ludington home around 1 p.m. Wednesday. When Courtland went inside to get something, Phillips left with Katherine. Police arrested Phillips a short time later in Scottville, but the baby was not with him. Ludington Police issued the Amber Alert for Katherine around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

An Amber Alert has been issued for a Ludington baby said to be "in extreme danger.' Ludington police said 4-month-old Katherine Shelbie-Elizabeth Phillips was taken Wednesday by a man who since has been located. Katherine was last seen wearing pink shorts and a matching pink tank top with black and pink flowers.

A pickup truck was destroyed by fire in the driveway of a Robinson Township home Wednesday afternoon, police said. The Robinson Township Fire Department received a call of a vehicle fire around 5:45 p.m. from the owner of 9743 Peaceful Pines Drive, Township Deputy Fire Chief Kerry Boyer said. A member of the household noticed that the Ford F-150 was on fire, Boyer said. Firefighters fought the blaze for 10 minutes, Boyer said, and the pickup is a total loss.

A medical issue is believed to be the cause of a crash that sent a 38-year-old Holland Township man to the hospital Wednesday afternoon, police said. Police responded to the accident on 120th Avenue, south of Riley Street, at 3:48 p.m., said Ottawa County Sheriff's Sgt. Brent Converse. Investigators said Eric Cook had been driving south on 120th Avenue when he had a medical issue and lost control of his 2000 Chevy Malibu. The car crossed over the center line and went off the east side of the road, and then hit and broke off a tree, causing the car to flip.

Livingston County authorities said a 3-year-old Genoa Township girl was critically hurt when her 63-year-old grandfather accidentally ran her over with a riding lawnmower. Lt. Curt Ruf of the Brighton Area Fire Department said the man was mowing the lawn at a home in Genoa Township on Wednesday afternoon when he began backing up to make another pass. Ruf said that the girl "went out to surprise him, and he didn't see her.'

Several thousand dollars worth of electronics, jewelry, guns and prescription medications have been reported stolen during a series of daytime home invasions which occurred on the east side of Ottawa County over the last couple of weeks, police said. Police are looking for help in identifying any possible suspects. Lt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said the home invasions were reported between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at locations in Allendale, Tallmadge, Polkton and Jamestown townships. The incidents intensified on Monday, he said.

Alcohol was a factor when a young woman ran a stop sign and hit the bedroom wall of an Ottawa County couple's home, said Sgt. Brian Buter of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. The accident happened around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 5200 block of Eighth Avenue in Georgetown Township. The woman was driving a 2005 Chevy Equinox west on Barry Street when she failed to stop at the intersection where Barry ends at Eighth Avenue, Buter said. The woman, who is in her 20s, drove the sport utility vehicle across the lawn of a home and the SUV hit the bedroom wall.

Since her disappearance, Boston police have opened a missing persons case, while her friends and family are pleading with the public across the country for help. A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday when a pickup truck turned into his path in Muskegon County's Fruitport Township, police said. The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. on East Broadway Avenue, near South Quarterline Road. Fruitport Township Public Safety Director Ken Doctor said the motorcycle was westbound on Broadway when an eastbound pickup made a left turn in front of the bike. The motorcycle collided with the truck, killing the rider, who was in his 40s. Investigators said they are still piecing together what led up to the collision.
