Authorities said they found a marijuana growing operation while investigating the accidental shooting of a 10-year-old boy in southern Michigan. The Jackson Citizen Patriot reported Friday that the boy's 44-year-old father could face charges including second-degree child abuse and manufacturing marijuana after the growing operation was found at the home in Calhoun County's Sheridan Township. The man's name wasn't released.

A 59-year-old West Michigan parolee has pleaded no contest to bestiality after the sexual assault of his pet dog. Jose Sanchez entered the plea Friday in Muskegon County Circuit Court. He faces up to 22-and-a-half years in prison when sentenced on July 12. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but is treated as such for sentencing. Sanchez was convicted in 1998 of second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a minor.

A prosecutor cleared two West Michigan law officers in the shooting death of an armed Gulf War veteran outside his home earlier this month, determining they acted in self-defense. Howard City Police Chief Steve DeWitt and Montcalm County Sheriff's Deputy Clayton Thomas fatally shot 47-year-old Matthew Speese outside Thomas' Howard City-area home on June 1. Officers were called to Speese's home after he told someone at a veterans' crisis line that he would kill himself and shoot police who came to the house.

The disappearance of a championship pool player who lived in southeastern Michigan is being investigated as a possible homicide after a man believed to be her boyfriend was stopped by police in Indiana for acting suspiciously, authorities said. Matt Harshberger, director of the Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety, told AnnArbor.com that his department was contacted Tuesday night by police in Merrillville, Ind., who had concerns about Dawn Fital, 45, after they detained the 44-year-old man.

A teenager who police said told them he killed a 16-year-old Traverse City girl has been charged with murder. Robert Schwander, 17, was arraigned Thursday in a Grand Traverse County court on a first-degree murder charge in the death of Carly Lewis. He's charged as an adult. He entered a not guilty plea. Bond was denied. A preliminary hearing is June 27. Police believe Schwander, the son of a sheriff's deputy, killed Lewis on June 2 in a vacant building and moved her body to a sand pile at a public works site two days later.

Norton Shores Police have released a composite sketch of a suspect who robbed two stores in that Muskegon County city. The first robbery was around 5 p.m. Sunday at Game Hits West, a video game store on Harvey Street. Police said the robber told the clerk he had a gun and ran off with the money. The second robbery was around 3 p.m. Tuesday at an Admiral tobacco store on Sternberg Road. The suspect talked with employees and paid for a drink, then snatched money out of an open register.

Police are looking for information on vandalism that occurred between 8 p.m. Monday and 6 a.m. Tuesday on a stretch of West Spring Lake Road near the Spring Lake Yacht Club. Spring Lake/Ferrysburg police are looking for information on who spray-painted bike path signs, the path itself, a residence's overhead garage door, and a retaining wall at the intersection of Landing Drive and West Spring Lake Road. The damage was discovered by a Ferrysburg Department of Public Works employee early Tuesday morning, police said.

A boy playing alone on a rope swing in his yard in Allegan County has died after the rope apparently became tangled around his neck. Police said Anthony Reyes was found Tuesday afternoon by family members outside his home in Ganges Township. State police said the rope was tied to a tree branch and used by the family's children. Authorities said the boy was 8 or 9 years old. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said the boy's death appears accidental, but it remains under investigation.

More than a dozen pet rats were found dumped in a park in Ludington. The Ludington Daily News reported 11 live rats and two dead ones turned up Monday afternoon in Copeyon Park. Mason County Animal Control Officer Joe Marion and Lakeshore Animal Friends volunteer Cassi Johnson collected the live rats, and city workers removed the dead ones. Officials were looking for homes for the animals. Marion said someone noticed bedding and exercise wheels dumped in the park and contacted animal control earlier in the day.

Three Zeeland men were hospitalized after their sport utility vehicle went under a semitrailer at a Holland Township intersection on Monday, police said. Police said the accident happened shortly after 6:15 p.m. when Amrit Mundy, 23, of Brampton, Ontario, Canada, drove his semitrailer truck through a red light on southbound U.S. 31 at Quincy Street. Sgt. Brian Buter of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said the empty semitrailer was struck by a 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor being driven east through the intersection by 67-year-old Ron Sisouphone of Zeeland.

The Ingham County Sheriff's Department said searchers have found the body of a 28-year-old man who fell into the Grand River while trying to help free his brother's kayak from a logjam. Chief Deputy Greg Harless said the body of Sean Arnett of Holt was discovered about noon Monday near the Burchfield Park boat launch. He disappeared Wednesday in the river in Delhi Township near Lansing. The Lansing State Journal reported Arnett had two children.

Ottawa County deputies said three men survived being run over by a semitrailer truck in a crash that closed U.S. 31 for nearly two hours on Monday evening. The accident happened around 6:15 p.m. on southbound U.S. 31 in Holland Township.

A woman who told police she's highly allergic to peanuts wants assault charges against her husband's ex-wife for sending him a letter smeared with peanut butter. The Battle Creek Enquirer reported the woman told police she believed the peanut butter on a bill was an attempt to harm her. The case is being reviewed by authorities. The Battle Creek woman told police said she came home during her lunch break Friday and found an envelope in the mailbox addressed to her husband with oil soaking through.

A 39-year-old Greenville man died Sunday after the boat he was fishing from overturned in a small Montcalm County lake. Don Sargeant died after falling into the water Sunday afternoon near Sheridan, about 35 miles northeast of Grand Rapids. A 72-year-old Fenwick man who was with him swam to shore safely. Two sheriff's deputies with life jackets swam to Sargeant and brought him to shore with the help of a rescue boat.Sargeant was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

An autopsy has found that a young woman who disappeared from Big Rapids last year was killed by a blow to the head. WWTV-WWUP reported remains found April 18 in Mecosta County's Austin Township, near Big Rapids, were determined to be those of Kristin Spires. Earlier this year, four people were charged in an investigation related to Spires' disappearance. They're not charged with harming the Barryton woman; rather, they are charged with being accessories after the fact, a felony.

Authorities said a 2-year-old girl died after being struck by a pickup truck driven by her grandfather as he was pulling out of his driveway in southwestern Michigan. The Kalamazoo Gazette reported the girl was struck about 8:30 p.m. Thursday in front of the home in Kalamazoo County's Texas Township. Names weren't immediately released. Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Pali Matyas said the initial investigation indicated that the death was accidental and the grandfather didn't see the girl.

Two firefighters were injured Thursday night while putting out a blaze that was started by a gasoline-powered generator in the basement of a home in Muskegon County's Fruitport Township. The fire started about 9:45 p.m. Fruitport Township Fire Chief Ken Doctor said a fuel tank on top of the generator ruptured as firefighters entered the room, causing a flash fire that burned two of them. One firefighter had second-degree burns to a leg and the other had first-degree burns to his face, Doctor said. They were treated at the scene.
