A 14-year-old Jackson boy has been turned over to his mother after driving drunk and crashing a stolen sport utility vehicle into a tree. WLNS-TV in Lansing reported police in Jackson County's Napoleon Township found the Dodge Durango about 9 a.m. Sunday. Police said they found the teen outside the vehicle. He was uninjured and was believed to have been wearing a seat belt. The boy had taken the Durango without permission from a friend's house.

Two people were taken by ambulance to the hospital after colliding in the bowl of the Grand Haven Skate Park early Tuesday afternoon. Bob Hammond, 28, of Grand Rapids and Nick Heil, 16, of Fruitport, were both alert and talking when they were taken away by North Ottawa Community Hospital ambulance and were going to be OK, said Grand Haven Department of Public Safety Officer Tom Winegar. Police and paramedics put Hammond and Neil on backboards and slid the stretchers up a ladder from the skating bowl.

A 39-year-old Marne man was arrested shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday for possession of a gun while intoxicated, said Lt. Joe Boyle of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Police located the man when they discovered his vehicle at the Rodeway Inn, at the corner of Beacon Boulevard and Taylor Avenue, in response to an alert sent over police radio to check on the man's well-being, Boyle said. Nobody was injured and the man was arrested without incident, Boyle said.

A 17-year-old Grand Rapids boy received help from a surfer, after the teen became too tired to make it back to shore while swimming in Lake Michigan early Tuesday evening, said Lt. Joe Boyle of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Emergency crews were called to the area of the City Beach in front of the Bil Mar Restaurant about 6 p.m. for a person in distress, Boyle said. The teenager was about 300 yards from shore. "(The boy) said he swam to the buoy and became too tired to swim back,' Boyle said.

An Ottawa County man who authorities said slit the throats of two horses belonging to his wife and a stable owner, as retribution for his belief that the two were having an affair, was sentenced today to 60 days on an electronic tether. An Ottawa County Circuit judge in Grand Haven also sentenced 47-year-old Dennis Finkler to two years probation, about $20,000 in restitution and fines, and community service. The Conklin man pleaded no contest in May to torturing and killing an animal, and malicious destruction of property.

Two men are recovery from gunshot wounds suffered shortly after Fourth of July festivities wrapped up in downtown Grand Rapids. Both men were shot in their legs just before 11:30 p.m., near Rosa Parks Circle. Police immediately began to evacuate people still in the area. "It is my understanding that there was some sort of fight or some sort of event occurring in the parking lot, some sort of commotion and struggle,' Grand Rapids Police Chief Kevin Belk said. "It was during that event that someone pulled out a firearm and fired at least two shots.'

Police said a 38-year-old man who was setting off fireworks in a boat overnight apparently drowned after jumping into a lake to try to retrieve a lantern that fell overboard. The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department said several agencies were still trying to find the man's body Monday evening. The victim was identified as Kerry Ulrath of Bangor. Sheriff Dale Gribler said the accident happened about 2 a.m. Monday on Donavan Lake in Bangor Township. It's about 50 miles south-southwest of Grand Rapids.

A 4-year-old Muskegon boy was killed Friday night when the car he was riding in went off the road and hit a tree, according to Michigan State Police. Elijah Wolfenbargen was one of three people taken by ambulance to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, where the boy was pronounced dead due to injuries suffered in the crash, police said. The crash occurred in the area of Sternberg Road near South Hilton Park Road in Muskegon County's Sullivan Township.

A carnival worker was killed early today after coming into contact with a power line in Sand Lake. It happened at a Fourth of July carnival around 3:15 a.m. "The ride was being dismantled at the time,' Sand Lake Police Chief Ken Williams said. "It is still under investigation at this time, but it appears contact was made with an electrical wire.' Police said it's not clear if the power line was down before the accident or because of the accident.

A Grand Rapids woman and four others in her car are all recovering after an accident Sunday afternoon. Police officers in Holland said the 35-year-old woman's car rolled over on westbound Interstate 196 near mile marker 47 around 1 p.m. Besides the driver, a 45-year-old man, two girls ages 12 and 9, and a 14 year old boy were in the car. They were all wearing seatbelts when the crash happened. None of them suffered serious injuries. Police said they were all able to crawl out of the car after the crash.

Two Spring Lake residents safely evacuated their home late Friday morning when a close lightning strike hit a sprinkler system electrical line and started a fire inside their house, Spring Lake Township Fire Chief Rick Nuvill said. Syed Mahmood, 18615 Woodduck Lane, said he was cooking eggs for his daughter at about 11:40 a.m. when there was a big bang and his smoke alarms started sounding. Storms had been rumbling through the area all morning, but this possible lightning strike sounded like it was just outside his house, Mahmood said.

A 40-year-old Grand Haven man reportedly drove off westbound Interstate 96 Thursday night and crashed his car into a wooded area west of Ionia. The man, whose name was not released, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital by ambulance, WOOD-TV reported. According to police reports, the man's car drifted off the interstate and into a ditch, and struck a tree near the 60-mile marker, near Saranac in Ionia County's Boston Township, at about 10 p.m. Police said alcohol and fatigue were factors in the one-car crash, WWMT-TV reported.

Police say 4-month-old Katherine Phillips remains missing, and the man accused of abducting her is refusing to say where the baby is located. Investigators said Thursday that Sean Phillips, 21, had an argument with Katherine's mother, Ariel Courtland, outside her Ludington home around 1 p.m. Wednesday. When Courtland went inside to get something, Phillips left with Katherine. Police arrested Phillips a short time later in Scottville, but the baby was not with him. Ludington Police issued the Amber Alert for Katherine around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

An Amber Alert has been issued for a Ludington baby said to be "in extreme danger.' Ludington police said 4-month-old Katherine Shelbie-Elizabeth Phillips was taken Wednesday by a man who since has been located. Katherine was last seen wearing pink shorts and a matching pink tank top with black and pink flowers.

A pickup truck was destroyed by fire in the driveway of a Robinson Township home Wednesday afternoon, police said. The Robinson Township Fire Department received a call of a vehicle fire around 5:45 p.m. from the owner of 9743 Peaceful Pines Drive, Township Deputy Fire Chief Kerry Boyer said. A member of the household noticed that the Ford F-150 was on fire, Boyer said. Firefighters fought the blaze for 10 minutes, Boyer said, and the pickup is a total loss.
