A woman and her young son were hurt after a large branch fell from an oak tree and pinned them to the ground. The Bay City Times reported that a man called 911 on Wednesday afternoon after seeing the woman and boy beneath the branch. They were taken to a hospital after fire crews lifted the branch. Bay City Interim Fire Chief Karey Prieur said the woman and the 3- to 4-year-old boy were conscious. Prieur said a number of children from a nearby school were in the area just before the branch fell.

A Detroit-area man had his 9-year-old daughter drive him to the store because he had apparently been drinking, police said Monday. Surveillance video from a gas station shows him telling a clerk that his daughter was his "designated driver.'

Police investigators have released the names of the two bank robbery suspects who were shot and killed in Ottawa County after a high-speed chase on Thursday morning. Michigan State Police have identified the two suspects as Kristopher "Kris' Joe Cheyne, 36; and Derryl Lee Lafave Jr., 32, both of Wyoming. Police said Lafave also was known as D.J. Lafave.

Ottawa County Sheriff Gary Rosema has seen his share of horrific incidents in his long career as a law enforcement officer. Few were as tragic as Thursday's bank robbery and high-speed chase in which a Walker police officer was killed, said Rosema, who has been a law enforcement officer for 35 years and sheriff for 18 years.

Authorities said corn kernels covered a half-mile stretch of Interstate 69 near Port Huron after a farmer failed to properly secure a load in his trailer. The Times Herald of Port Huron reported the mess slowed traffic Thursday morning on eastbound I-69 in St. Clair County's Wales Township. St. Clair County Road Commission crews were using a large broom and plow to gather up the corn and place it back in the farmer's trailer. The farmer from Memphis was heading to an ethanol plant in Marysville when the corn got dumped.

A Walker police officer was killed on Interstate 96 in Ottawa County this morning during a chase of bank robbers that started in Muskegon County. "It could have been much worse," Lt. David Roesler of the Michigan State Police said during a press conference held at Coopersville City Hall this afternoon.
