Police said an Allegan County man suspected of gunning down his 73-year-old father has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Allegan County Sheriff's Department said Roger Polmanteer, 50, shot himself in the face with a rifle as deputies pursued him Friday. The Holland Sentinel reported he died Saturday afternoon. The Sheriff's Department said a relative found the body of Lloyd Polmanteer on Thursday in the Watson Township home he and his son shared.

A Fruitport woman was put on probation for three years when she was sentenced Monday in Ottawa County Circuit Court for embezzlement from a downtown Grand Haven business. Patricia Lou Shappee, 24, 391 Park St., had pleaded guilty to embezzlement over $1,000, but less than $20,000. She was also ordered to pay restitution of $25,452, as well as fines and costs of $198. Lt. Joe Boyle of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety said the embezzlement occurred at a business at 207 Washington Ave.

Police said a crew removing a dock from a lake near Colon found boxes in the water that contained stolen jewelry. The workers spotted the boxes in Palmer Lake on Thursday. After a quick check of area homes, the crew realized several summer cottages had been burglarized. None of the jewelry that was found in the lake contained precious metals or stones, and it may have been discarded because it had little monetary value. Michigan State Police say there have been several break-ins and they're investigating.

Firefighters extinguished a fire this morning at a home under construction in the Albee's Cove subdivision, near 144th Avenue and Mercury Drive in Robinson Township. Robinson Township Fire Chief Paul VanVelzen said it appears the cause of the fire at 14258 Mackinaw Trail was due to an electrical problem with air conditioner power supply lines. "It was kind of a strange thing,' he said.

A blaze that broke out at a Grand Rapids-area metal recycling facility early today has been extinguished by firefighters. WZZM-TV reported no one was injured in the fire at Louis Padnos Iron & Metal in Grandville. It took about an hour for crews to get the blaze under control. The cause wasn't immediately known.

A 38-year-old woman was killed Thursday night in a three-car crash on M-45 in Tallmadge Township. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said Michelle Newman of Allendale crossed the center line and side-swept another car, then hit a pick-up truck head on at about 8:45 p.m. Police said Newman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, Allysia Ashman of Richland, is listed in fair condition at an area hospital. The accident happened near 24th Avenue, about 5 miles east of Allendale. It closed the road for four hours.

Police said the pilot of a single-engine plane was killed when his aircraft crashed near the runway at Tulip City Airport on Thursday night. The crash happened on the northeast end of the airport around 6:45 p.m. Police have not released the name of the pilot, as they were still trying to notify his family members. The Holland Sentinel reported on its website that the pilot was a 60-year-old Gobles man who was practicing "touch-and-go landings' at the Holland airport; and he was the only occupant of the experimental, home-built plane.

The Ohio State High Highway Patrol has seized more than $300,000 in illegal drugs and made three arrests in traffic stops along the Ohio Turnpike in northern Ohio. The patrol said the first arrests were made Tuesday in Lorain County when officers stopped a car for allegedly following another vehicle too closely. A drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to about $200,000 worth of cocaine and heroin in the car.

Officials said a school bus with no children aboard swerved trying to avoid a vehicle that ran a stop sign in Kent County and crashed into a ditch. No serious injuries were reported following this morning's crash. Officials said it happened as a Rockford Public Schools bus was heading to pick up elementary school students in the area, located about 12 miles northeast of Grand Rapids. Superintendent Michael Shibler said that the bus driver tried to avoid a Ford Flex that ran a stop sign.

A rescue crew from Coast Guard Station St. Joseph plucked a recreational boater from Lake Michigan after his 38-foot boat sank Wednesday afternoon. Rescued was a 50-year-old man from Berrien Springs. His name is not being released. Coast Guard Station St. Joseph was contacted at 6:16 p.m. by the man on a marine band radio. The man reported he had looked into the engine compartment of his boat to investigate a burning smell and smoke, and saw the compartment begin to flood with water.

An autopsy has found that a 21-year-old Grand Valley State University student from Saginaw who collapsed while playing basketball with friends on campus had a chronic heart condition. The school said police were called to the Allendale Campus Recreation Center about 6 p.m. Tuesday after Shane Peoples-Welch fainted. Fieldhouse staff performed CPR and a defibrillator that's kept on site was used by officers, but he couldn't be revived.

Two people were taken by ambulance to the hospital following a one-car accident shortly before 9 this morning on Griffin Street, according to Lt. Joe Boyle of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. An elderly couple was in a car that was southbound in the 900 block of Griffin Street when the driver had a medical incident and the car veered off the road and struck a telephone pole, Boyle said. The woman suffered minor injuries. Both of the occupants of the car were wearing seat belts, according to Boyle. Their names and conditions were not available.

A 56-year-old northwestern Lower Peninsula man has been sentenced to 25-47 years in prison in the 2009 bludgeoning death of his girlfriend. The Traverse City Record-Eagle reported Robert Cheek told a judge in Benzie County Circuit Court in Beulah that he doesn't remember killing Valerie Smith in April 2009. The Frankfort man blamed an addiction to prescription drugs in the hammer attack. Cheek told the court Tuesday his remorse "cannot be described in words.'

UPDATE: Authorities have released the name of a Grand Valley State University student who died while playing basketball at an Allendale recreation center on Tuesday. They said Shane Anthony Peoples-Welch was a junior at GVSU and studying public administration. He was from the Saginaw area. The university's website said about 200 students gathered in the GVSU Kirkhof Center on Tuesday night for a memorial service.

Students at Forest Grove Elementary School were kept inside Tuesday morning after a mysterious odor was detected around the school by students and faculty. Sgt. Valerie Weiss of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said deputies were called to the school, 1645 32nd Ave. in Hudsonville, at about 9:15 a.m. on reports of the odor. The Sheriff's Department worked with school officials and Ottawa County Emergency Management to determine the origin of the smell, Weiss said.

An ex-convict who killed seven people in July before taking his own life in a Grand Rapids shooting spree had pledged in a suicide note to take his mother-in-law "with me.' Grand Rapids police released new information about the case Tuesday, including video and audio recordings. Officials probably won't ever know with certainty why Rodrick Dantzler fatally shot a former girlfriend, his estranged wife, his 12-year-old daughter and four others related to them, including his mother-in law, Grand Rapids Police Chief Kevin Belk said.
