A Muskegon man is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 7 in connection with the break-in of a Spring Lake Township home, where he also allegedly assaulted the female occupant. William Henry Nelson, 22, pleaded no contest to three of the four charges when arraigned Monday in Ottawa County Circuit Court. He will be sentenced on charges of first-degree home invasion, assault with intent to commit sexual penetration and larceny in a building. Nelson entered a not-guilty plea on an aggravated stalking charge.

A Jenison man was seriously injured when his pickup truck was broadsided Wednesday evening in Jamestown Township, said Sgt. Bob Ruster of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Lester Ball, 68, was driving his 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck south on Eighth Avenue when his truck was hit by a 2008 Honda Odyssey van, Ruster said. The van, driven by Jennifer Zuverink, 30, of Hudsonville, was westbound on Perry Street at about 7:20 p.m. and traveled through the stop sign at Eighth Avenue, Ruster said.

Dozens of firefighters from four townships spent the night battling a warehouse fire in Byron Center. The fire broke out at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at Air Technologies, located in the 100 block of 84th Street S.W. The business makes air and gas compressors. Dispatchers said crews at the scene reported flames coming through the roof of the building. Early this morning, Kent County deputies closed off 84th Street near South Division Avenue to give firefighters space to deploy around the fire. The street was re-opened around 6 a.m.

The death of a Coopersville man found in the Grand River behind his boat in August has been ruled accidental, Detective Corey Allard of the Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Department said today. Michael Kirby, 51, was reported missing the afternoon of Aug. 20 by a friend, James Cunningham. Cunningham was supposed to meet Kirby that morning to work on his boat in the Village Cove Marina, 900 W. Savidge St. in Spring Lake, Allard said.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department has connected some juveniles with a series of thefts from motor vehicles in Holland and Park townships, said Sgt. Brent Converse of the Holland/Park Township Community Policing Unit. Some stolen merchandise has been returned to its owners, Converse said. Police also have some items - such as glasses, sunglasses, jewelry and shoes - that were not reported stolen. Anyone who may be missing these items is asked to contact the Sheriff's Department and file a report.

Police said they're trying to figure out what caused an explosion that turned a vehicle along a Michigan street into a blackened shell and seriously injured a man and two children inside. Monroe Police Lt. Charles Abel said the blast Tuesday evening is "being listed as a car fire with an explosion,' and he doesn't know whether it was the result of a vehicle malfunction or something else. Police in the city near the Ohio state line had said this moring it was "being investigated as the detonation of a car bomb.'

One person suffered minor injuries in a three-vehicle accident late Monday morning on northbound U.S. 31, just south of the drawbridge, said Lt. Renee Freeman of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. The female passenger of one of the cars was taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital. No information was available on her condition.

A toddler playing with a lighter started a house fire late Monday afternoon on Slayton Street, according to Lt. Renee Freeman of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Emergency crews responded to 1539 Slayton St. at 3:45 p.m. when a woman called 911 and said a bed was on fire. Andrea Young tried to extinguish the blaze, but quickly called 911 and evacuated the house - said her husband, Matt Young. Andrea and the child were the only ones home at the time. They were not hurt, authorities said.

A Lansing-area man suffered a leg injury in a crash of an antique airplane shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday at the Hatfield Airport, 18155 120th Ave. Dan Schiffer, 62, seemed otherwise OK, said his cousin, Al Schiffer, another one of the pilots. Dan was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. His condition was unknown at this time. Airfield owner Bill Hatfield said they had about 14 planes onsite Saturday for a gathering called a "Quiet Birdmen Fly-in."

The president of Shape Corp. of Grand Haven and a Muskegon doctor suffered severe injuries in a one-car accident Sunday afternoon on Sternberg Road west of U.S. 31. Tom Devoursney, 52, of Norton Shores was the driver and owner of the car involved in the 1:51 p.m. accident, Shape Corp. Human Relations director Doug Peterson confirmed this morning. His friend, Anthony Wilson, 52, of Muskegon, was the passenger in the car. Both men suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover, Peterson said.

An 18-year-old Grand Rapids-area woman died early Saturday in a one-vehicle crash in Ottawa County. Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said Tami Ann Lindemulder of Wyoming was driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero east on Fillmore Street at around 2:30 a.m. when she apparently failed to negotiate a curve in the road, east of 36th Avenue in Georgetown Township. Austin said she lost control of her sport utility vehicle and it ran off the road, rolled over and struck a power pole.

A trailer home at the Country Estates Mobile Home Park in Spring Lake Township was destroyed in a fire Friday night. Neighbors called 911 at about 8:45 p.m. after they saw smoke coming out of the trailer at 17399 Greenspire Drive, Spring Lake Fire Marshal Brian Sipe said. "First arriving fire units found heavy black smoke coming from the residence,' Sipe said. "Upon entering the residence, conditions worsened and firefighters were forced to make a defensive attack.'

A Grand Haven man was cited for not having a secure load after the 27-foot boat he was trailing fell off the trailer and onto West Savidge Street in Spring Lake around 6:30 p.m. Friday, according to police. The man, whose name was not released by police, was driving a pickup truck with his friend's boat on the attached trailer. When he pulled his truck and trailer out of the Wesco gas station and onto South Cutler Street, the boat fell off the trailer, Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Officer Adam Hill said.

A 22-year-old Marine who recently returned from Afghanistan was killed after losing control of his car and striking a tree in Allegan County. Police told WOOD-TV that Gregory Courtney's Chevy Camaro was traveling about 120 mph just before the 5 a.m. Friday crash in Trowbridge Township. The Kalamazoo Gazette reported that alcohol also is believed to be a factor in the crash, about 30 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. Courtney was thrown from the car, which crashed less than a half-mile from his father's home.

A 29-year-old Dorr man is facing home invasion charges for his alleged involvement in several Ottawa County burglaries. Richard William Bouse was arrested Monday and is facing a first-degree home invasion charge. Lt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said Bouse is likely responsible for a series of home invasions in western and southern Ottawa County between Aug. 29 and Sept. 12.

Muskegon police were called to break up a fight between two female students where a staff member at the school has been injured on Thursday. Police were called at about 12:30 p.m. for a large fight at the corner of Maple Street and Ada Avenue at the Muskegon Public Schools Community Education Center. Jon Felske, district superintendent, said an administrative assistant was escorting two girls from the building after a fight when she was knocked to the ground. The woman hit her head and was knocked unconscious. She was taken to the hospital and treated for her injury.

UPDATE (11:23 a.m.): The woman was reportedly found about a mile from her home. The Muskegon County Sheriff's Department is searching for a missing woman, who is an Alzheimer's patient. The Sheriff's Department said Marilyn Baustert, 75, left a home on foot in the 200 block of North Bossett Road sometime between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 3 a.m. today. A family member woke up and found her missing. Marilyn Bastert is 5-foot-3-inches tall and weighs 165 pounds. She has brown eyes.
