My favorite part was spending Coast Guard parade day 75 miles north with my wife in a couple of kayaks on the Little Muskegon River, and not seeing another soul on the whole trip!
I'm a 30yr grand haven native (30yr old :) and i have ALWAYS loved the coast guard festival since i can remember, and i don't mind the festival at all again i live here Grand Haven is my "home" and we are coast guard city usa period! so the festival only happens once a year, and to the people who voted "glad its over" if you don't like my home then get out! the festival its ONCE A YEAR FOLKS! plus think of the tourisim it brings our already touristy town, Can't wait for next year's festival.
That's the spirit Matt. I'm twice your age and I look forward to the festival every year also. I spent a good portion of each day immersed in the goings on, enjoying the food, sights and sounds. It's a people watcher's dream...like the circus and the zoo came to town at the same time :-)
I was downtown Saturday from 7am until after midnight and enjoyed the whole day. I find it sad that there are so many wet blankets that live here and don't want to participate in the festivities. I only saw 3 people I knew all week! The whole week always goes by too quick for me and I hate to see the fireworks come to an end. Already got next year's festival marked on my calendar.
It's been way to quiet around here this week.
I agree with both of you as well. Coast Guard only comes once a year and goes by way too fast. I wish it was longer. I enjoyed all the activities this year too. I've been going to Coast Guard since I was a kid and now both of my kids enjoy it too. We planned our whole week out to be able to enjoy a lot of the activities.
I don't think people should be criticized for honestly saying they are glad it is over. That "agree with me or get out" mentality is just what leads to prejudice and hatred in our world today. Yes, the festival brings in revenue, but I don't benefit ONE BIT from it. It costs me more to live here than it would to live in the surrounding areas, we pay the high tourist prices on a daily basis ALL year long. And I am often thankful that I live east of US 31. However, areas west of 31 get more attention, because of the tourists. That's not fair. I can't get a parking spot because of the tourists, and again, I do not benefit in any way from their $. How 'bout you lovers of the festival stop calling others, who disagree with you, names! Let's try respecting everyone's opinion.
