A trio of local soccer players will be vying for a national championship today at in Brandon, Fla. Grand Haven's Matt Davis, Chad Buitenhuis and Ryan Schoonover are members of the Kalamazoo Kingdom travel soccer team. The Kingdom scored a 1-0 victory over TSF Academy in Monday's semifinals of the Boys U17 division of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Super Y-League North American Finals. The Kingdom will face defending national champion Ironbound SC in today's championship game.

The Crimson Tide edged out Oklahoma State in the final round of voting Sunday and will play the top-ranked Tigers in the BCS national championship game on Jan. 9 in New Orleans. Undefeated LSU is the only team to beat Alabama all year, and the top BCS official sees a do-over as a perfectly good title game.

A majority of the honors in Lauren Hazekamp's athletic career have been associated with volleyball at Fruitport High School, but with her hot start in basketball, that could quickly change. The Trojans' senior point guard had her best performance of her three-year varsity career, scoring a career-high 25 points, and also tallying nine steals, seven assists and eight rebounds in Fruitport's huge 66-63 win over Fremont on Friday. The win improves the Trojans to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in league play.
