Suffering an upset loss at the hands of Reeths-Puffer in the district tournament last fall has been a driving force behind the Grand Haven varsity soccer team all season.

Spring Lake and Fruitport shared the Lakers Eight Conference championship this fall, but venturing out-of-conference in Week 9 proved to be a difficult task for the Lakers and Trojans.

Spring Lake's swimming and diving squad completed a strong season in Coastal Conference meets with a 112-71 victory over Muskegon Catholic Central on Thursday at the Spring Lake Aquatic Center. "We really went into this final conference meet with a focus: win,' said head coach Nikki Theune. "We knew, with a win, that the conference championship would be within reach. Thursday evening was the first time all season that Katy Walters' varsity volleyball squad at Grand Haven has been completely healthy. How bad has the sickness and injury bug been for Grand Haven? Volleyball is by no means a contact sport, but the Bucs have had three players suffer concussions this season.

Spring Lake's varsity boys soccer team hasn't had the best luck dealing with Mother Nature in the Division 2 district tournament. A year ago at Grand Rapids Northview, the Lakers had to play through a driving rain storm with whipping winds in a contest against the host Wildcats that was also delayed several times by lightening. To make matters worse, Spring Lake had its season ended on the dreary evening.

Rachel Bruinsma finished with 25 kills, 19 digs and three blocks, but it wasn't enough as Western Michigan Christian fell to North Muskegon in five games.
