A back injury sidelined Spring Lake's Ryan Fedewa for several weeks this fall, but the Lakers' sophomore is finally back at full strength, and just in time. Fedewa, who plays No. 1 singles, leads the Lakers' varsity boys tennis team into Friday's Division 3 state finals at Holly/Grand Blanc. He's got a chance to make a nice run at the state meet thanks to a favorable draw.

Both Grand Haven's boys and girls cross country teams closed out their O-K Red Conference seasons with 6-1 records following their wins over Jenison and East Kentwood on Wednesday at Grand Haven High School. The Bucs' girls lone loss came on Sept. 14 against Hudsonville, but head coach Greg Russick still believes his team is ready to defend its Division 1 championship. On Wednesday, Grand Haven easily outdistanced Jenison, 18-45, and East Kentwood, 18-44.

Stopping shots is nothing new for Grand Haven goalie Ethan Beswick. Scoring goals, on the other hand, is a bit out of the ordinary, but the Buccaneers' senior proved capable at both on Wednesday. Beswick stopped three of the four penalty kicks he faced and also converted on a penalty kick of his own, helping the Buccaneers score a thrilling shootout victory over rival East Kentwood in the O-K Red Conference tournament championship game.

Doug Fister delivered another strong start in a game Detroit needed and Miguel Cabrera homered and hit a tiebreaking double to lead the Tigers past the Texas Rangers 5-2 Tuesday night in Game 3 of the AL championship series. Detroit dropped the first two games in Texas before turning to Fister, who won the decisive fifth game of the division series at Yankee Stadium last week. He was sharp again, allowing two runs and seven hits with no walks in 7 1-3 innings.

For one half, Grand Haven's young water polo team held its own against one of the state's top teams. But the No. 4-ranked Eagles of Hudsonville pulled away from the host Buccaneers after halftime, scoring a 19-7 victory.

When Amy Schaap started the volleyball program at Lakeshore Christian Academy in Grand Haven, there were some significant growing pains to overcome. The Virginia native clearly remembers the Conquerors' first-ever varsity game, and marvels at how far the program has come in just three years. "Our first match, we lost 25-0,' Schaap said, shedding a laugh at the humble beginnings. "When we first started, except for maybe a couple girls, most of them didn't know what volleyball was all about.'

Spring Lake's varsity volleyball team cruised past Tri-County in three sets on Tuesday, winning 25-11, 25-16, 25-12. The Lakers improve to 5-1 in Lakes Eight Conference play with the victory and now stand at 21-7 overall. Hayley Schram was a big reason for her team's success as she served for 20 points, including six aces. She also had nine kills and five digs. Evie Lorimer added six points, including four aces, along with 13 kills and four blocks.

Visiting Westen Michigan Christian trailed 1-0 at intermission Monday, but exploded for three second-half goals while keeping Muskegon Catholic scoreless en route to a 3-1 win. The Warriors received two goals from senior Ryan Briggs and one from Alec Breit off assists from Breit, Chaise Schuiteman and Bailey Heykoop. Catholic's Marc Strehle scored off a corner kick with 17 minutes left in the first half. The Warriors (12-4-1) outshot the Crusaders (7-8) 17-7. WMC keeper Jacob Berens made two great saves in the second half to keep MCC off the board.

For the three captains of the Spring Lake varsity soccer team, the feeling of losing a game in the Lakes Eight Conference is unknown. That's because it has yet to happen. The streak of 30-straight wins will carry over to at least next fall after the Lakers clinched the final game in Lakes Eight competition this season, winning the conference tournament championship game over visiting Orchard View on Monday at Spring Lake Middle School, 1-0.

Jake Vanderlaan scored just 25 seconds into Monday's game, helping the Grand Haven varsity soccer team pull out a 3-1 victory over Jenison. That win moves the Buccaneers into Wednesday's O-K Red Conference tournament title game against East Kentwood. The Falcons, the top seed in the tournament, beat Rockord in Monday's other semifinal game, 2-0. Vanderlaan scored his second goal three minutes after his first, putting the Bucs on top 2-0. Nate Rose then scored to finish off the scoring for the Bucs.

Eastern Michigan University men's basketball coach Rob Murphy recently announced the signing of former Grand Haven standout Austin Harper. Harper, who last year played at Glen Oaks Community College, will be eligible to play immedately for the Eagles. "I made a visit to Eastern and felt a connection with the coaches,' Harper said. "I felt that this was a good fit for me and it is a great opportunity to continue my basketball career.'

Veteran basketball coach Jim Goorman, who won his 500th game as the boys varsity coach at Western Michigan Christian during last season, was recently inducted into the Basketball Coaches of Michigan Hall of Fame during a banquet in Lansing. Goorman, who has been the Warriors' varsity coach 32 years and worked at the school for 43 years, won his 400th game on Jan. 6, 2007. His overall record is 504-282.

After a disappointing loss to O-K Red Conference rival Rockford last week, Bucs' coach John Tarr said his team was angry and determined to make amends for the loss. The Bucs rebounded with a solid ninth-place showing at Saturday's Portage Invitational - a showcase of many of the best cross country teams in the state. Hartland won the Division 1 race with 97 points. Rockford was sixth with 176, while the Bucs totaled 238.

Spring Lake's varsity volleyball team suffered a disappointing loss in the semifinals of the Lakers' home invitational to Lakes Eight Conference foe Grant on Saturday. The Lakers fell to the Tigers in two games, 25-20, 25-19. "We played consistently through the day until the semifinals,' said Lakers' coach Sarah Bulthuis. "In this match, we had too many hitting errors and our passingwas not consistent enough.'

Grand Haven swimming coach Doug Thorne continues to be encouraged by his team's improvement, including the Bucs showing at a home quad meet on Saturday at the Grand Haven Aquatic Center. The Bucs defeated the co-op squad from Traverse City Central, 184-130, then was defeated by Holland Christian by the slimmest of margins, 158-157.
