Both Spring Lake and Fruitport scored victories over lower-seeded opponents in the opening round of the Lakes Eight Conference boys soccer tournament on Monday. The top-seeded Lakers dispatched of an overmatched Grant squad, 8-0, behind two goals apiece from Tanner Berg and Adam Clauss. Michael Zietlow, Riley Kammeraad and Luke Platz added single goals, as did Nick Mazzole, who netted his first goal of the season.

It was a day full of first-place finishes for the Grand Haven cross country teams, as the Bucs totaled three invitational wins - the boys and girls each captured the Allendale Falcon Invitational title, while a second Grand Haven girls team won the Fruitport Invitational at Rycenga Park. The Bucs' girls competed without their No. 1 runner, sophomore Claire Borchers, who was resting sore shins, but her teammtes picked up the slack. At Fruitport, the Bucs totaled 44 points, led by sophomore Ashley Rice's first-place showing at 20:57.

In a battle of state-ranked teams, Spring Lake's varsity soccer squad scored an impressive 3-1 win over host Whitehall on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers entered the game ranked No. 4 in Division 2 while the Vikings came in ranked No. 2 in Division 3. Spring Lake got out of the gates quickly, scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes. First, Tanner Berg's pass sprung Adam Clauss on a breakaway. Minutes later, Clauss made a nice play to create space for Kyle Kendall, whose shot found the back of the net.

Grand Haven reached the semifinals of Saturday's West Ottawa volleyball invitational, falling to Wayland in the semifinals, 21-25, 25-20, 18-16.

Grand Haven's offense has been spectacular through the air this fall. On Friday, it was the Buccaneers' ground game that stole the show. Senior running back Devin Howard rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns, and Dakota Smith added 138 yards and a pair of scores, helping the Buccaneers roll over the winless Grandville Bulldogs, 41-13, on Homecoming night at Buccaneer Stadium. The Bucs' offensive line paved the way for the victory as Grand Haven ran the ball 51 times for 375 yards.

Grand Haven's varsity football team won its Homecoming game over Grandville on Friday night, 41-12. At halftime of the game, Buccaneer seniors Norris Ellis and Shar'rae Davis were crowned Homecoming king and queen. Ellis is an outstanding defensive lineman for the Bucs' football team while Davis is a star on Grand Haven's girls basketball team that reached the Class A state semifinals last fall. The seniors were announced as winners of the Homecoming spirit week competition.

The turnovers and mistakes that plagued Fruitport's varsity football team so badly in its upset loss last week at Spring Lake carried over to the first half in their showdown at Fremont. So senior running back Mike Reyes made it a lot easier for the Trojans' offense - just take the rock and run to pay dirt.

Spring Lake's Lakes Eight Conference victory over Orchard View on Friday was a little less dramatic than its thrilling one-point win over rival Fruitport last week, but the Lakers don't mind. They're still atop the league standings, which is now a three-way tie between the Lakers, Fruitport and Fremont. The Lakers (5-1) easily handled their business, outscoring the host Cardinals 28-0 in the second half, en route to a 49-16 victory.

Spring Lake's junior varsity and freshmen football teams combined forces to defeat Orchard View on Thursday. The Cardinals do not have a freshman team, so the JV played the first half and into the third quarter, then the freshmen played the remainder of the game. Charlie Warber of the JV team scored four touchdowns for the Lakers, while Ross Underberg added a 20-yard touchdown run.

Spring Lake extended its Lakes Eight Conference winning streak to 27 games spanning the past three years with an 8-0 victory over Fremont on Thursday. The win wraps up the Lakers' third consecutive regular-season Lakes Eight title. Eight different players scored goals for Spring Lake: Alec Strahl, Austin Gabris, Adam Clauss, K.J. Sanchez, A.J. Broughten, Ben Keller, Michael Zietlow and Riley Kammeraad. The Lakers are now 13-1 overall and 7-0 in league games.

Grand Haven suffered a disappointing setback at the hands of East Kentwood on Thursday. The host Buccaneers lost 25-20, 22-25, 27-25, 25-19, falling to 21-10 overall and 2-2 in the O-K Red Conference. The loss virtually eliminates the Bucs from contention for the league title. The Bucs had no answer for East Kentwood's Natalie Means, who finished with 25 kills and four aces. Abby Cole led the Bucs with 19 kills and five blocks, while Krysteena Davis and Taylor Craymer each had 10 kills. Davis added four blocks.

Grand Haven's girls golf team placed sixth at Thursday's O-K Red postseason tournament, which was held at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale. Grandville and East Kentwood tied for the league title, with Hudsonville finishing just one stroke behind the leaders. Sophomore Martha Ramsey shot a career-low 96 for the Bucs, including a 45 on the front nine. Kira Glass and Amanda Merz each shot personal-best rounds of 110.

For the second consecutive year, the Lakes Eight Conference will hold a league-wide cancer awareness night on Friday. The event, called "Tackle Cancer Together,' will feature conference teams wearing purple and white jerseys, which will bear the names of people who have either passed away to cancer, survived cancer, or are currently battling the disease. Both Spring Lake and Fruitport will play games on the road on Friday, so they will wear white uniforms with purple lettering.

It's nearly time for playoff baseball, so as a little refresher, I sorted through a box of dusty old VHS tapes in my basement and found a recording of the Tigers' American League Divisional Series-clinching win over the Yankees from back in 2006. Watching the Tigers bounce around Comerica Park in a state of euphoria after that win got me hyped up to watch this year's playoffs - but it also made me miss some of my favorite Tigers from that team that are no longer with the club.
