Grand Haven graduate John Potter was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Special Team Player of the Week after his outstanding performance for Western Michigan on Saturday. It's the third time in Potter's career that he's earned Player of the Week honors. In the Broncos' 38-7 win over Nicholls State on Saturday in Kalamazoo, Potter was a perfect 5-for-5 on his point-after-touchdowns and also connected on a 40-yard field goal. Potter has now connected on 78-straight PAT's at Western, extending his school record.

Spring Lake and Ludington played to a 4-4 tie, the first blemish in Lakes Eight Conference play for either team. The Lakers suffered a big blow when sophomore Ryan Fedewa had to forfeit his match at first singles because of an injury. He was leading Ludington's Jake Perez 5-4 at the time.

Spring Lake's girls cross country team outran the field at the Hill and Bale Invitational in Fremont on Saturday. The Lakers finished with 48 points to win the large school division at the event. Ludington was second with 78 points in the 10-team competition. Brittany Beeler was the overall race winner with a time of 19 minutes, 38 seconds. Carly Arteaga took ninth in 21:02, followed by Jaime Kossuth in 11th place at 21:15.

Rivals Fruitport and Mona Shores played to a 0-0 tie on the soccer field Saturday afternoon. The Sailors had more shots on the game, but the Trojans were saved by a nice game by goalie Loghan Stong, who had nine stops. "Both teams had probably three quality scoring chances, and I'm shocked that the score ended at 0-0,' said Trojans' coach Greg Kobylak, whose team is now 6-1-1. The Trojans have recorded six shutouts in their eight games this fall.

Jerel Worthy and the Michigan State Spartans had a long week to stew after a sluggish performance in their season opener. Then they took the field against Florida Atlantic, ready to prove a point. Worthy helped set the tone with an early sack, and No. 17 Michigan State held FAU to one first down in a 44-0 victory over the Owls on Saturday. Kirk Cousins threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns for the Spartans, who outgained FAU 434-48.

Two huge special teams plays carried Rockford to a pivotal early-season victory over O-K Red Conference rival Grand Haven on Friday night. The Rams' K.C. Zenner returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown four minutes into the game, then 90 seconds later, teammate Ryan Hartnagel returned a blocked put 3 yards to paydirt and a 14-0 lead. The Buccaneers were forced to play catch-up all night and never were able to get within striking distance in a 42-30 loss at Rockford's Ted Carlson Memorial Stadium.

The host Trojans dashed out to a commanding 28-0 second-quarter lead and coasted to an impressive 42-13 victory over visiting Tri-County on Friday evening. Zack Goldman got the Trojans off and running with a 30-yard scoring run. David VanBergen then returned a blocked punt 39 yards for a 14-0 lead Logan Six than broke off touchdown runs of 16 and 45 yards, with Matt Boroff converting the point-after kick on both for a 28-0 advantage. Cody Bayle added a 34-yard touchdown catch from Tyler Fehler as the Trojans led 35-7 at the half.

The rivalry between Spring Lake and Fremont on the gridiron has been considerably one-sided toward the Lakers the past two season because, for one, they've been far more physical at the line of scrimmage. Fremont pushed, shoved and trampled through that stigma on Friday at Thomas E. Grabinski Field, rumbling over the host Lakers for 367 yards rushing and swarming Spring Lake's offensive backs with consistent pressure in the Packers' surprising 28-13 victory.

Spring Lake's varsity boys tennis squad traveled to Big Rapids for a tri-meet and came away with a victory over the host Cardinals and a tie with Cadillac. The Lakers cruised past Big Rapids, winning all four doubles flights in commanding fashion. The Cardinals' only win came at No. 2 singles, where Sterling Brinker edged the Lakers' Gabriel Guzman, 4-6, 7-6 (5) [10-8]. Against Cadillac, the Lakers won just once in singles play as Ryan Fedewa thumped Mike Salminen at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1.

Grand Haven varsity boys soccer coach Aaron Dean had some stern words for his team at halftime of Thursday's showdown with Spring Lake. The Buccaneers certainly got the message. Grand Haven (3-0-3) scored three consecutive goals after trailing 1-0, recording a 3-1 win over previously-unbeaten Spring Lake (6-1) on the Lakers' home field. "He was really pounding it in our heads that we have to work hard, a lot harder than we were,' said Buccaneer senior Nate Rose, who scored the go-ahead goal with 24 minutes remaining in the contest.

Grand Haven's varsity volleyball team won its O-K Red Conference opener on Thursday, overpowering Jenison, 25-5, 25-13, 25-12. "I could not be prouder of how we played tonight. This is the best we've looked all season,' said coach Katy Walters, whose team is now 18-6 overall. "We came out on fire tonight and everything was going our way. We served very tough, which forced them to be out of system, and our blocking was awesome.'

Slow catch rates are expected for a few days in some parts of the states after a strong cold front descended on the Great Lakes region, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. By the end of the week, fish should have adjusted to the change in the barometric pressure and catch rates are expected to pick up again. Grand Haven's varsity girls golf team came up short at Rockford's North Kent Golf Course, falling to the Rams, 186-211. Sierra Olthoff had a nice round for the Buccaneers as she carded a 47 after shooting a 63 at Hudsonville on Monday. "She bounced back from a tough start to the week and improved by about 15 strokes,' coach Roger Glass said. "That's right about where she should be.' Kristin Carlson and Martha Ramsey each shot a 51 for the Bucs, and Hailey Watkins carded a 62.

Many would consider Scott Staal's junior season a wasted year. Staal missed the season with a broken elbow - sustained while throwing the football during two-a-days - an injury that kept him off the field the entire year. Staal, on the other hand, looks at his painful junior year as a blessing in disguise.
