Tied at 7-7 with rival Reeths-Puffer entering the fourth quarter, Fruitport quickly turned the contest one-sided by scoring 21 points in the quarter en route to a 28-7 victory. Zack Goldman's 72-yard run on a toss sweep left -- keyed by an outstanding lead block by running back Mike Reyes -- started the Trojans' rally on the first play in the fourth quarter. The Trojans added touchdown runs by fullback Logan Six and back-up quarterback Tyler Fehler to blow the contest open. Goldman led the Trojans with 131 yards rushing on just nine carries.

The Grand Haven Bucs open on the road at Traverse City Central, the Spring Lake Lakers are at home against Whitehall and the Fruitport Trojans are at Reeths-Puffer. It was a night to pay tribute to the Coast Guard. But it was an air force that stood out Thursday at Thirlby Field. Senior Scott Staal, making his varsity start, completed 16 of 20 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns as Grand Haven won the inaugural Coast Guard Trophy with a season-opening 35-10 win over Traverse City Central. A year ago, Spring Lake scored a touchdown as time expired to beat Whitehall in the season-opener for both teams. On Thursday night, the Lakers looked poised for another dramatic win, but a costly interception by quarterback Keegan Wolter with just over a minute remaining helped the visiting Vikings hold on for a wild 33-31 win over the host Lakers at Thomas E. Grabinski Field.

Petoskey dominated the field at Wednesday's Grand Haven Buccaneers' tennis quad, scoring 23 points. The host Bucs and the Lakers of Spring Lake tied for second with 11 points each, while Muskegon Catholic placed fourth with three points. Petoskey won all four singles flights and also took first in three of the four doubles flights. Grand Haven's No. 2 doubles pair of Adam Carlisle, a sophomore, and Ryan Peterson, a junior, broke up a Petoskey sweep by winning their flight.

As I tucked my 4-year-old son into bed last night, I told him how excited I was to be coaching his TCYSO soccer team this fall. His response? "Dad, who do you think is going to win our games?' It's been a roller-coaster season for a trio of Spring Lake linemen, and the Lakers haven't even played a game yet. Coach Jerry Rabideau was looking forward to having the services of seniors Tyler Goeglein, Andrew Hissom and Zach Boeve, but all three suffered various injuries during the offseason or early in fall camp that would keep them out a minimum half of the season.

Grand Haven's varsity girls golf team placed seventh out of seven teams at Wednesday's O-K Red Conference preseason meet, which will count for a quarter of the final league standings The Bucs' round of 447 was 16 strokes better than their effort at Monday's Jenison Invitational, but still well off the pace of event winner Grandville, which shot at 378.

Grand Haven's varsity volleyball team showed its resiliancy on Tuesday, as the Buccaneers battled into the semifinals of the Grand Rapids Northview Invitational, despite playing without starting setter Jami Hogeboom. Hogeboom suffered a concussion during Saturday's Lakeshore Classic tournament at Grand Haven and was held out Tuesday for precautionary measures. "Hopefully she'll be back by Saturday when we travel to East Kentwood for the WMVOA Tournament,' Grand Haven coach Katy Walters said.

Volunteers are needed for the Old Boys Brewhouse Oktoberfest races being held Sept. 16-17. The Kids Race on Friday, Sept. 16, kicks off the weekend of events. Saturday's races include a marathon beginning at 8 a.m., half marathon beginning at 8:15 a.m., and 5k beginning at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers are needed for both Friday and Saturday.

The Run for Sight 5K Run/Walk will take place the morning Saturday, Sept. 3, at Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon. The event raises thousands of dollars annually to support vision rehabilitation services for those in our community living with severe vision loss. Shoreline Vision partners with the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired to put on this event.

Willie Bennick scored twice and Nate Rose, Mike Moran and Corey Vanderlaan also added goals as the Grand Haven varsity soccer team thumped Reeths-Puffer on Tuesday, 5-1. The Buccaneers (1-0-1) led 4-0 at halftime. Bennick and Rose scored back-to-back goals in a five-minute stretch midway through the first half, then Moran scored to make it 3-0. Vanderlaan's goal late in the half put the Bucs firmly in control at halftime.

Spring Lake's varsity swim team took first place at the Ludington Relays for thie third straight year and for the first time under new coach Nikki Theune. "This meet is always a great way to start the season,' she said. "It's fun and it gives us a chance to see how the other teams in our conference are doing.' The Lakers opened the meet on a positive note, with their 400 medley relay team of Jaylen Adkins, Lydia Gleason, Roxane Strobel and Ginny Cotterall taking first place.

Fruitport's varsity volleyball team started its new season on Saturday the same way it ended last year - with a championship. The Trojans, the defending Class B state champions, turned in an impressive showing at Grand Haven's 14-team Lakeshore Classic by rolling to the tournament title. The Trojans finished 6-0 during the day, inclduing a 25-20, 25-16 victory over the host Buccaneers in the championship match.

Spring Lake's varsity volleyball team showed resiliancy in battling through a trio of three-game matches at Saturday's Reeths-Puffer Rocket Invitational, but the Lakers ran out of gas in the semifinals against Zeeland East, falling 25-22, 25-20. "We had to play three matches to stay in the tournament and the girls displayed a lot of inner drive and fight to stay alive,' Spring Lake coach Sarah Bulthuis said.
