Volunteers are needed for the Old Boys Brewhouse Oktoberfest races being held Sept. 16-17. The Kids Race on Friday, Sept. 16, kicks off the weekend of events. Saturday's races include a marathon beginning at 8 a.m., half marathon beginning at 8:15 a.m., and 5k beginning at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers are needed for both Friday and Saturday.

The Run for Sight 5K Run/Walk will take place the morning Saturday, Sept. 3, at Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon. The event raises thousands of dollars annually to support vision rehabilitation services for those in our community living with severe vision loss. Shoreline Vision partners with the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired to put on this event.

Willie Bennick scored twice and Nate Rose, Mike Moran and Corey Vanderlaan also added goals as the Grand Haven varsity soccer team thumped Reeths-Puffer on Tuesday, 5-1. The Buccaneers (1-0-1) led 4-0 at halftime. Bennick and Rose scored back-to-back goals in a five-minute stretch midway through the first half, then Moran scored to make it 3-0. Vanderlaan's goal late in the half put the Bucs firmly in control at halftime.

Spring Lake's varsity swim team took first place at the Ludington Relays for thie third straight year and for the first time under new coach Nikki Theune. "This meet is always a great way to start the season,' she said. "It's fun and it gives us a chance to see how the other teams in our conference are doing.' The Lakers opened the meet on a positive note, with their 400 medley relay team of Jaylen Adkins, Lydia Gleason, Roxane Strobel and Ginny Cotterall taking first place.

Fruitport's varsity volleyball team started its new season on Saturday the same way it ended last year - with a championship. The Trojans, the defending Class B state champions, turned in an impressive showing at Grand Haven's 14-team Lakeshore Classic by rolling to the tournament title. The Trojans finished 6-0 during the day, inclduing a 25-20, 25-16 victory over the host Buccaneers in the championship match.

Spring Lake's varsity volleyball team showed resiliancy in battling through a trio of three-game matches at Saturday's Reeths-Puffer Rocket Invitational, but the Lakers ran out of gas in the semifinals against Zeeland East, falling 25-22, 25-20. "We had to play three matches to stay in the tournament and the girls displayed a lot of inner drive and fight to stay alive,' Spring Lake coach Sarah Bulthuis said. "There were times when we had to scramble and we really made some great defensive plays. It was nice to see that hustle.'

Fruitport's varsity boys soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 win over Battle Creek Lakeview at the Portage Invitational on Saturday. The event was shortened to one game because of lightening. Sophomore Zach Gilson scored the Trojans' lone goal on a breakaway. Brad Edwards picked up the assist. Edwards, Taylor McLaughlin, Cody Pekel and Ryan Mason played outstanding defense in front of goalie Loghan Stong, according to coach Greg Kobylak.

Center fielder Austin Jackson threw out Kosuke Fukudome at the plate to complete a game-ending double play and the Detroit Tigers held on to beat the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in a wild game Sunday. Delmon Young and Victor Martinez homered in a seven-run third inning as the first-place Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Indians. The Indians could have taken over first place with a sweep of their own, but leave Detroit trailing by 4 1-2 games in the AL Central race.

With as many accomplishments that Lauren Hazekamp has earned and as many big postseason matches that she's been involved with on the volleyball court, it seems like her varsity career at Fruitport has spanned eight years, not four. "It does feel like an eternity ago, coming into try-outs as a freshman,' Hazekamp said after the Trojans' photo day inside Fruitport High School on Friday. "But time really does fly. I can't believe this is my senior season already. I can't believe it's here.'

Spring Lake's varsity soccer team made an early statement in what head coach Jeremy Thelen hopes is the first of many this season. The Lakers posted a shutout on Western Michigan Christian, the defending Division 4 state champions Friday evening in the season opening contest for both squads. The Warriors managed just two shots on goal in their 4-0 setback at Spring Lake Soccer Field.

The Hope College men's basketball team is a welcoming a 6-foot-10 NCAA Division I transfer in October. Center Nate VanArendonk is leaving Central Michigan University to join the Flying Dutch-men. Hope coach Matt Neil confirmed Van-Arendonk's decision on Thursday. He said the Grand Haven native will be one of several incoming freshmen at Hope this fall, but declined further comment. VanArendonk would have four years of eligibility remaining. He missed the final 28 of CMU's games last season due to mononucleosis and received a medial redshirt.

Storms and cooler weather have once again changed the dynamics of fishing, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said in its weekly fishing report. The DNR says panfish are still there, but the bite was slow. Bass fishing remains good in the early morning or late evening. More salmon were caught but lake trout fishing was fair, it says. Fruitport's top three singles flights each went unbeaten on the day as the Trojans placed second at their own tennis invitational. Kenowa Hills was first with 18 points, followed by Fruitport with 12, Reeths-Puffer with 10 and Western Michigan Christian with five. The Trojans' John Sullivan went 3-0 at No. 1 singles, as did Nolan Clark at No. 2 and Alex Bowen at No. 3. Blake Hutson was 1-2 at fourth singles for the Trojans.

Spring Lake seniors Nic Parnell and Michael Hartliep started their 2011 season the same way they finished a majority of their matches during the 2010 campaign, winning easily. The pair play No. 1 doubles for coach Charlie Bassett's Spring Lake varsity tennis squad, and after winning the Lakes Eight Conference championship and finishing runners-up at regionals last year, they entered the current season with lofty expectations.

With a national championship on the line, Grand Haven's Jacob Vanderlaan shook off the nerves and calmly sent his penalty kick into the back of the net. His four teammates did the same, wrapping up the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship in the U-17 division for the Grand Rapids Crew Juniors soccer team. The Crew needed a fantastic showing against Penn Fusion Celtic in the championship game, which was tied at 1-1 after regulation and remained tied throughout overtime. The national championships took place July 27-29 in Phoenix.
