Several area residents recently finished a nearly 500-mile bike trek as they participated in the Register's Annual Greater Bike Ride Across Iowa. Included in that group is Randy White, now a five-year veteran of the RAGBRAI. To be the best, Grand Haven's Matt Burns realized he needed to play against and with the best. As an attacker on the Grand Rapids-based True Lacrosse travel team, Burns is making the most of that opportunity. The team recently captured the championship at the National Scholastic Club Lacrosse Association Summer Championships, held in Metuchen, N.J. In the championship game on Sunday, True Lacrosse scored a 10-6 victory over a team from New York. Burns flourished during the three-day tournament, scoring 11 goals and dishing off five assists.

It's been long overdue for Don Roberts and his wife Carolyn to compete at the Coast Guard Festival Run. The Lakeland, Fla., residents and Battle Creek natives have quite the running log: Don, 79, said he's been running competitively for 33 years, while Carolyn, 77, has 25 years of experience. Even with his health failing, Larry Rueger wanted his last days filled with what he loved the most - inspiring young men in the game of football. Battlling kidney disease, Rueger was still a presence at Fruitport's football training this summer, lending his expertise at motivating in the weight room or helping out in any way he could on the field. The longtime coach passed away Sunday morning at the age of 70.

Grand Haven High School graduate Becca Addison overcame the late morning heat and a strong field to take home top honors in the 10K portion of the annual Coast Guard Festival Run, held at the Tri-Cities YMCA and surrounding downtown Grand Haven Saturday morning. The run was presented by North Ottawa Community Health System. Addison, who will be a junior this fall at the University of Michigan, enjoyed strong seasons on the Wolverines' womens' cross country and track teams this past season. She was two-time All-American during the indoor track season.

When Mike Smith called Grand Haven High School varsity football coach Mike Farley and asked if the Buccaneers would be interested in a project to help kick off the Coast Guard Festival, Farley didn't hesitate. "I was more than happy to oblige,' Farley said. "It's a great opportunity to get out and give back to our community. Coast Guard week is a big deal for everybody in Grand Haven and we just wanted to play our part.'

Cameron McNeil grew up sailing butterflies at the Spring Lake and White Lake yacht clubs, and has made a name for himself in sailing circles as one of the top MC Class sailors in the nation. This past weekend, McNeil, a 2000 Spring Lake High School graduate, got a chance to go up against the top sailors from across the country in an entirely different boat - the Laser. McNeil was one of 22 sailors invited to participate in the U.S. Sailing Singlehanded Championships, an annual regatta that pits the top sailors of singlehanded boats from across the country.

Brooke Sheldon had no idea what kind of turn-out to expect when it was announced that the three big 5K races in Grand Haven would team up as part of a series. After all, the opening race, the Klever Innovations Kick Off to Summer Run, takes place on Memorial Day weekend while the second, the Grand Haven High School Patriot's Day Run, is over the 4th of July holiday. The third, and largest, is Saturday's Coast Guard Festival Run, which serves as kick-off to the week-long Coast Guard Festival.

Spring Lake Yacht Club sailors dominated the 2011 Butterfly National Championship Regatta. The regatta was hosted by Grand Rapids Yacht Club and took place on Reeds Lake from July 20-22. More that 60 sailors from around the country competed in Junior and Open Class fleets. The Junior Fleet includes all sailors 16-and-under while the Open Class is for all ages. SLYC's Frank Reeg was the second overall finisher in the Junior Class. Mara Strobel-Lanka took fifth, Angelo Riolo was sixth, Olivia Windemuller was ninth, and Mason Wolters placed 10th.

About 75 teams came out for the Midwest Beach Volleyball Tour's last of three stops at Grand Haven on Saturday. "It's something that a lot of people enjoy,' said Stacey Johnston, who ran the amateur tournament. Light rain and humidity didn't stop more than a hundred runners from taking part in the 2011 Coast Guard Park Trail Run at Coast Guard Park in Ferrysburg on Saturday morning. Todd Losee, race director for Inspirational Racing, the company behind the run, said he estimated about 160 runners took part in this year's run. "We've had a real good turnout,' Losee said. "We've had about a 50-percent increase over last year, so it's been a real nice increase in people.'

The Westside Lacrosse travel team - a squad made up of high school players from West Ottawa, Holland and Grand Haven Hhigh schools - has enjoyed a successful summer at tournaments across the Midwest. The team won the HIgh School Boys A Bracket at the Brewtown Showdown in Milwaukee on June 24-26; took runner-up honors at the Great Lakes Lacrosse Invitational in Kalamazoo on July 9-10; and will soon add to its tournament resume with a trip to the Cherry Bomb lacrosse tournament in Traverse City on July 29-31.

The Grand Valley State women's cross country and track and field programs left little doubt that the Lakers would be the best Division II running program in the country this year. For the third consecutive season, Grand Valley State has been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II Program of the Year, as released by the national office in New Orleans recently.

LANSING (AP) - Bass and panfish action is in full swing on the inland lakes, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The walleye bite has slowed with the extremely warm weather, the DNR said in its weekly fishing report. It said some of the rivers are low and clear which makes trout fishing much more of a challenge. SOUTHWEST LOWER PENINSULA
