The death of a Coopersville man found in the Grand River behind his boat in August has been ruled accidental, Detective Corey Allard of the Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Department said today. Michael Kirby, 51, was reported missing the afternoon of Aug. 20 by a friend, James Cunningham. Cunningham was supposed to meet Kirby that morning to work on his boat in the Village Cove Marina, 900 W. Savidge St. in Spring Lake, Allard said.

Spring Lake District Library will be hosting a virtual visit via Skype with best-selling mystery author J.A. Jance at 2 p.m. Saturday. Jance will include a reading from her latest novel, "Betrayal of Trust,' which debuted at No. 9 on the New York Times Bestseller List. Attendees will have an opportunity to speak with the author via the video conferencing technology and purchase a book from The Bookman, which will include a book plate signed by the author.

When Hajime Nishi wants to know how he did in a marathon, he doesn't look at the large clock ticking off the hours, minutes and seconds as he crosses the finish line. Instead, he looks at the camera he carries in his fanny pack. On Saturday, Nishi, a native of Kyoto, Japan, had a very good day at the Shoreline Sport and Spine Oktoberfest Marathon. "I took over 100 pictures, which means I enjoyed it,' Nishi said with a laugh. "If I only take 20 pictures, that means I did not have a good time.'

Eleven-year-old Ezekiel DeJonge can check off one of the items on his bucket list: running a marathon. The Spring Lake boy ran 1 mile in the Old Boys' Brewhouse Oktoberfest Kids Race on Friday night - prepping for today's 5K run and completing the 26 miles that are equal to a marathon within a year. "It's cool,' Ezekiel said. "I was finishing my marathon and I'm running a 5K (today).'

Spring Lake scored a 6-2 win over Comstock Park on Friday in boys tennis action. The Lakers were without several key team members, which bumped senior Nic Parnell, typically a fixture at No. 1 doubles, up to No. 1 singles. Parnell responded with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Max Bent. The Lakers' Gabriel Guzmam won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Sean Dusterwinkle won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.

Cathleen, an eight-year survivor of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), celebrated in style with a party hosted by her husband, Scott Pranger, on Sept. 3, that family and friends thought she might never see.

A Grand Haven man was cited for not having a secure load after the 27-foot boat he was trailing fell off the trailer and onto West Savidge Street in Spring Lake around 6:30 p.m. Friday, according to police. The man, whose name was not released by police, was driving a pickup truck with his friend's boat on the attached trailer. When he pulled his truck and trailer out of the Wesco gas station and onto South Cutler Street, the boat fell off the trailer, Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Officer Adam Hill said.
