There won't be much competition during Tuesday's Spring Lake Village Council election. All candidates are running unopposed and only one write-in candidate is registered, according to Village Clerk/Treasurer Maribeth Lawrence. The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Barber School, 102 W. Exchange St. Councilman Jim MacLachlan is running for a two-year term as village president. Bill Filber said earlier this summer that he has decided "to take a breather' and not seek a fourth term as council president.

The rivalry between Spring Lake and Fremont on the gridiron has been considerably one-sided toward the Lakers the past two season because, for one, they've been far more physical at the line of scrimmage. Fremont pushed, shoved and trampled through that stigma on Friday at Thomas E. Grabinski Field, rumbling over the host Lakers for 367 yards rushing and swarming Spring Lake's offensive backs with consistent pressure in the Packers' surprising 28-13 victory.

Grand Haven varsity boys soccer coach Aaron Dean had some stern words for his team at halftime of Thursday's showdown with Spring Lake. The Buccaneers certainly got the message. Grand Haven (3-0-3) scored three consecutive goals after trailing 1-0, recording a 3-1 win over previously-unbeaten Spring Lake (6-1) on the Lakers' home field. "He was really pounding it in our heads that we have to work hard, a lot harder than we were,' said Buccaneer senior Nate Rose, who scored the go-ahead goal with 24 minutes remaining in the contest.

Spring Lake's athletic teams are known for their school colors of red, black, and white, but the Lakers' volleyball team dabbled a little green with their uniforms on Tuesday. The green ribbons tied onto their shoe laces was a tribute to Brenda Blahnik, the mother of Lakers' junior setter Emily Blahnik.
