It's been a roller-coaster season for a trio of Spring Lake linemen, and the Lakers haven't even played a game yet. Coach Jerry Rabideau was looking forward to having the services of seniors Tyler Goeglein, Andrew Hissom and Zach Boeve, but all three suffered various injuries during the offseason or early in fall camp that would keep them out a minimum half of the season.

West Michigan residents will be transported back to the excitement and triumph of V-E Day at Bravo On the Boat 2011 - a fundraiser for The Little Red House Adult Day Care Services on Saturday, Sept. 24. Think Bob Hope, Andrews Sisters and Marlene Dietrich; flyboys and GIs; the Jitterbug and Lindy; and swinging to Big Band sounds. Bravo! On the Boat 2011 will take place aboard the USS LST-393 in Muskegon. The event will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails, and music from the Lakeshore Big Band. A strolling dinner will follow at 7 p.m.

The ballot is set for the Sept. 13 Village of Spring Lake election, but write-in candidates have until 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, to file a declaration-of-intent form. Village Councilman Jim MacLachlan is running unopposed for a two-year village president term. Village President Bill Filber said he decided to not run for re-election. Councilmen Stephen Nauta and David Bennett are seeking re-election to four-year council seats. No one is running for a third vacant four-year council term.

Volunteers are needed for the Old Boys Brewhouse Oktoberfest races being held Sept. 16-17. The Kids Race on Friday, Sept. 16, kicks off the weekend of events. Saturday's races include a marathon beginning at 8 a.m., half marathon beginning at 8:15 a.m., and 5k beginning at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers are needed for both Friday and Saturday.

A two-year agreement is in place with Spring Lake Public Schools teachers that will enable the district to significantly reduce its labor costs. The Spring Lake Board of Education on Tuesday approved a two-year contract with the district's 132 teachers. The teachers had already ratified the agreement on Aug. 18. Teachers have agreed to a two-year wage freeze and significant changes in their health insurance plans. Teachers who are eligible for step pay raises will receive one-half of a step increase during the second year of the contract.

An autopsy has been completed on the body of a man pulled out of the Grand River Saturday evening, but the cause of his death is still undetermined, Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Chief Roger DeYoung said late this morning. Michael Kirby, 51, of Coopersville, died sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning when he fell into the water behind his boat docked at the Village Cove Marina, 900 W. Savidge St. in Spring Lake. Kirby was last seen by friends after 10:30 p.m. Friday at the Holiday Inn, police reported. He was discovered missing Saturday morning.

The Safe Routes to School construction project in the village is scheduled to wrap up next week - just in time for the 2011-12 school year. The intersections of Prospect and Exchange streets and Williams and Exchange streets are scheduled for repaving on Thursday, according to Village Manager Ryan Cotton. But Exchange Street likely won't be open to traffic until a crosswalk grid pattern is completed early next week. Cotton said, if the weather holds, he expects Exchange Street to be open on Aug. 31.

Fire officials were investigating a small fire in a living room at 201 Barber St. in Spring Lake at about 9:30 this morning, said Sgt. Curt Theune of the Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Department. Firefighters were called at 7:36 a.m. after an alarm alerted a lower-floor tenant to the fire. Theune said the tenant saw the flames, then got her children out of the house. Neighbors put out the small fire with a garden hose, Theune said.

Jane Ladley, a Spring Lake resident and museum educator, will be leading an historic walk through the Spring Lake Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday. Ladley will highlight the lives of prominent Spring Lake residents responsible for developing the Spring Lake area. She will also point out and discuss gravestone symbolism. The walk is sponsored by the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. Advance registration is not necessary.

The body of a 51-year-old Coopersville man was recovered from the Grand River after a friend reported him missing late Saturday afternoon. Emergency personnel were called to the Village Cove Marina, 900 W. Savidge St. in Spring Lake, at 5:36 p.m. on a report of a missing person, Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Chief Roger DeYoung said. Village Cove Harbormaster James Cunningham called police to report that Michael Kirby, who had a 41.5-foot Sea Ray at slip No. 19, was missing and that one of his sandals was found floating in the water.
