Jane Ladley, a Spring Lake resident and museum educator, will be leading an historic walk through the Spring Lake Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday. Ladley will highlight the lives of prominent Spring Lake residents responsible for developing the Spring Lake area. She will also point out and discuss gravestone symbolism. The walk is sponsored by the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. Advance registration is not necessary.

The body of a 51-year-old Coopersville man was recovered from the Grand River after a friend reported him missing late Saturday afternoon. Emergency personnel were called to the Village Cove Marina, 900 W. Savidge St. in Spring Lake, at 5:36 p.m. on a report of a missing person, Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Chief Roger DeYoung said. Village Cove Harbormaster James Cunningham called police to report that Michael Kirby, who had a 41.5-foot Sea Ray at slip No. 19, was missing and that one of his sandals was found floating in the water.

Spring Lake's varsity soccer team made an early statement in what head coach Jeremy Thelen hopes is the first of many this season. The Lakers posted a shutout on Western Michigan Christian, the defending Division 4 state champions Friday evening in the season opening contest for both squads. The Warriors managed just two shots on goal in their 4-0 setback at Spring Lake Soccer Field.

Spring Lake seniors Nic Parnell and Michael Hartliep started their 2011 season the same way they finished a majority of their matches during the 2010 campaign, winning easily. The pair play No. 1 doubles for coach Charlie Bassett's Spring Lake varsity tennis squad, and after winning the Lakes Eight Conference championship and finishing runners-up at regionals last year, they entered the current season with lofty expectations.

French Academy of Cosmetology student Dana Cook will be thinking of a special person in her life as she raises money today for breast cancer awareness. Cook said her grandmother, who was diagnosed 15 years ago, is still going strong at age 83. "Luckily, with my grandmother, they caught it in time,' said Cook, 47.

Although details are confidential at this point, C3 Exchange Board Chairwoman Judy Swanson said a tentative agreement is in place to sell the church building. "We are in the fortunate position of having a number of parties that have expressed interest,' Swanson said Tuesday. "We have come to a tentative agreement with a potential buyer. It's going to be several weeks before we know for sure, and there is a confidentiality clause for both the seller and the buyer.'

Village Council on Monday appointed a two-member advisory committee to sort through recently discovered contamination issues at Mill Point Park. Although exact figures won't be known for another week, engineers estimate it will cost between $25,000 and $80,000 to clean up the soil, depending on the method. Excavation for the Grand River Greenway and new restrooms at the park recently uncovered the contamination, according to Village Manager Ryan Cotton. On Monday, Cotton consulted with engineers and construction teams about potential options.

An on-again, off-again grant for land purchases is off again - apparently for good. In December 2010, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources approved a $330,000 Trust Fund Grant for Spring Lake Village to attempt to purchase eight parcels for the second phase of the Grand River Greenway bike path, as well as a parcel at the southeast corner of Exchange and School streets, which is used for overflow parking at Mill Point Park.
