Benefit concert is 6-9 p.m. Friday at Spring Lake Presbyterian Church, 760 E. Savidge St. Another cross is coming down from a Spring Lake church, but for a completely different reason than the last. "We will be the second Main Street church to remove our cross this year,' said Pastor Dan Anderson of Spring Lake Presbyterian Church. The congregation of the former Christ Community Church, now C3 Exchange, removed their cross and changed their name in June 2010 to emphasize a mission of being "an inclusive community.'

Escape the summer heat and enjoy a free movie at Spring Lake District Library at 2 p.m. Friday. Boys and girls are invited to watch "Rio,' an animated comedy about the adventures of a domesticated macaw from Minnesota who finds himself in Rio de Janeiro. The movie is 96 minutes long and is rated PG. Boys and girls of all ages are welcome to attend. Children age 7 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. The Tri-Cities Historical Museum is offering an evening walking tour of the village at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10. The 12-block walk, which takes about 75 minutes, will begin and end at the Spring Lake Village Hall, 102 W. Savidge St. Participants will learn about early schools, pioneers who built the village and other interesting bits of history. Advance registration is not necessary. There's no doubt the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival has always been child friendly, with events such as the annual Kid's Day and the ever-popular downtown carnival. Thanks to an effort from the North Ottawa County Council on Aging (NOCCOA), there's also an event now dedicated to those 50 and older.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid Exchange Street next week while road work is being done at the intersections of Prospect and Williams streets. Traffic calming devices called "bumpouts' are being installed as part of the village's Safe Routes to School grant project. Similar devices are in use at Jackson and Exchange streets. Eastbound Exchange Street traffic will be detoured down Meridian to River Street to Lake Avenue. Westbound traffic will be the reverse.

Grammy Award winner Barbara Bailey Hutchison will perform at Spring Lake District Library at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, for kids. Hutchison won a Grammy for Best Musical Recording for Children. Her songs feature the importance of reading and the fun of going to the library. She has released 17 CDs - eight of them featuring children's music and three of those were nominated for Grammy awards. Other highlights of her resume include three concerts at the White House and jingles she has sung for major corporations.

The Holiday Inn staff celebrated the re-launch of the waterfront hotel this week after more than $2 million in renovations. About 500 people attended Monday's event - which included tours of the remodeled hotel rooms, lobby, indoor pool, fitness and business center. "It opens up everyone's eyes that we're a refreshed property,' General Manager April Schmidt said. "Hopefully, we'll drive in more business and more employees. More business brings in more employees.'

A painting with watercolors class will be held Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Spring Lake District Library, 123 E. Exchange St. Local artist Mary Sundstrom will demonstrate basic skills and techniques during this hands-on class. Participants will paint a still life and learn techniques like wax, leaf printing and resist. The class is open to those age 16 and older. Pre-registration is required as seating is limited. Now that the dog days of summer are upon us, Dr. James Moore has some advice: take preventive measures to keep your pets from becoming overheated. Moore, who operates Harborfront Hospital for Animals in Spring Lake, said it is imperative that owners keep their pets hydrated during heat waves. "Water is incredibly important. It helps control their temperatures,' he said.
