About a dozen teenagers took to the dance floor while another dozen watched from the wings during an evening of swing dance fun Friday night at Spring Lake's Mill Point Park. "It was warm, but I think the rain earlier cooled things off,' said dance instructor Ben Terpstra, a student at Hope College. "It was a beautiful night.' All high school students are invited to the two-hour event, called "The Dance Project,' which runs from 7-9 p.m. every Friday. Refreshments are served.

A 27-year-old Spring Lake man suffered only minor injuries after a car he was riding in was struck by another vehicle on Thursday afternoon. Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police said the incident happened at 12:25 p.m. when a car driven by a 62-year-old Spring Lake resident, heading south on Lake Avenue, was struck by a car driven by a 70-year-old Spring Lake resident, who was turning left off River Street onto Lake. The 27-year-old was a passenger in the 62-year-old's car.

The Grand Haven-based Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company will stage an all-male cast production of Shakespeare's "Cymbeline' at C3 Exchange in Spring Lake, July 29-31. This production is directed by Bob Jones, who travels to West Michigan from Virginia to direct for Pigeon Creek.

The cost of playing a sport for Spring Lake High School students took a jump earlier this week. At Monday's school board meeting, a measure was approved which would require all student-athletes to pay a one-time fee of $75 to play sports for the Lakers. Previously, student-athletes paid $30 for each season they participated in a sport. Three-sport athletes would have paid $90 a year under the old system.

State Rep. Amanda Price will be at Spring Lake District Library from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, to talk with constituents about their concerns. Price had to cancel a previously scheduled July 18 talk because of scheduling conflicts, the library's Lisa Donner said. Price represents the state House 89th District, which includes the Tri-Cities. Village officials, Friends of the Grand River Greenway and others were on hand Monday evening at Mill Point Park for groundbreaking ceremonies for the first phase of the Grand River Greenway project. "We are thrilled that our fundraising efforts have come to fruition,' said Megan Crumbacher Doss, chairwoman of the Friends of the Grand River Greenway. "We have received 98 percent of our initial goal of the $1.3 million. More pledges are coming in for this amazing project.'

The village of Spring Lake will host a groundbreaking gathering for the first phase of the Grand River Greenway at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Mill Point Park off School Street, south of Savidge. The bike path, a vision from the village's 1987 Master Plan, will run from Village Cove Marina just east of the Holiday Inn, through the wetlands to Mill Point Park - then east through Tanglefoot Park to Division Street, ending at Exchange.

Sidewalk construction is ahead of schedule along River Street, according to Village Manager Ryan Cotton. The sidewalk installation, part of a $223,000 Safe Routes to School federal and state grant, includes River Street from Lake Avenue to Fruitport Road. Next week, sidewalk pouring is scheduled for the west side of Fruitport Road north to Lakeside Trail. Also included in Safe Routes to School construction was the west side of Prospect, north of Exchange and South Street, which was completed earlier this summer.
