Hopes for an updated fire service agreement between Spring Lake Township and Village were doused Monday night when a motion to approve it ended in a tie vote. The measure needed a majority vote to pass. Township Supervisor John Nash said Clerk Carolyn Boersma, who was not in attendance Monday night, indicated she would vote in favor of the agreement - which does not raise the $12,000 rate that the village has paid the township for fire protection since the original 1976 contract.

During a meeting filled with more emotion than approved motions, proposed land acquisition for Phase 2 of the Grand River Greenway died on the table Tuesday night. In the process, Village Council kissed a $330,000 grant goodbye, and jeopardized future Mill Point Park expansion. Following vocal opposition from Councilman Marv VandenBosch and a handful of village residents, Councilman Steve Nauta made a motion to proceed with a resolution to appropriate the local funds for potential land acquisition, but it died for the lack of anyone seconding it.
