Village Council on Monday night unanimously agreed to collaborate on planning and zoning services with neighboring municipalities, but hiring its own planner in the future remains a strong possibility. Council voted 7-0 to use Grand Haven Township Planner Kristin Keery and Spring Lake Township Community Development Director Lukas Hill to replace former Village Community Services Director Kathy Staton, who retired last month. Staton was a full-time employee, but spent about half of her hours on planning and zoning matters, according to Village Manager Ryan Cotton.

More than 350 runners competed in Saturday's Heritage Festival 5K Run. None of them could keep up with Kevin Bence. Bence, of Grand Rapids, won the event for the third consecutive year, running a strong time of 17 minutes, 5 seconds on the flat, fast 5K course. "I was happy with it. It was a good run,' said Bence, 22, who ran competitively at Michigan Tech. "I've run this the last three years and it's a nice flat course. I like how small it is, plus I like winning it.'

Village Council is expected to decide tonight whether or not to collaborate with Spring Lake Township and the City of Grand Haven on planning and zoning services. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Barber School, 102 W. Exchange St. Village Community Services Director Kathy Staton retired in May. She was in charge of code compliance, zoning matters and also attended monthly Village Planning Commission meetings.

Two sports new to the Spring Lake Heritage Festival lineup were introduced to participants in Central Park Saturday morning. Around 40 people gathered at the tennis courts in Central Park for an of Pickleball, said Jimmy O'Hearn, who gave the demonstration. Some stayed and played a few rounds of the game while, in the baseball diamond nearby, a group of people clad in kilts played an entirely different sport - the sheaf throw.

The third day was the charm for the Spring Lake Heritage Festival after a low turnout and rain dampened Tuesday and Wednesday events. While smoke was pouring from Mill Point Park during Thursday's Wings on the Water barbecue chicken wing contest, senior citizens were heating up fun of their own at the first Senior Art Mixer at the Holiday Inn. Earlier in the day, seniors spooned up ice cream at the Little Red House as they listened to the Spring Lake Jazz Band play music from the 1940s.

One of the oldest women's match play golf events in the country returns to Spring Lake Country Club next week. The Spring Lake Invitational will hold its 90th tournament when this year's event kicks off with 18 holes of qualifying stroke play on Monday. Flighted match play will follow on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. According to event organizer Mary Kay Taylor, the SLIT has become so popular over the last several years that another flight was added for this year's event.

The Spring Lake school board voted Wednesday to privatize custodial services for the district, effective July 1. In two unanimous votes, the board awarded a three-year contract to Reliant Professional Cleaning and to lay off the district's 12 custodians. The move will save the district $314,000 per year over its current arrangement, Spring Lake Public Schools officials said.

Shoreline Vision officials say their village satellite office is proving to be a strategic location. The company's seventh location opened in January at 625 E. Savidge St., a site formerly occupied by G&L Chili Dogs. Dr. John Nametz, a longtime local optometrist, joined Shoreline Vision and said he brought many of his patients with him. Nametz has practiced in the village since 1982.

Many activities rescheduled for later today Weather washed out Wednesday's Family Fun Night, but Spring Lake Heritage Festival volunteers plan to heat it up today with a barbecue chicken wing contest from 4-8 p.m. at Mill Point Park. Several postponed Family Fun Night events will run simultaneously with Wings on the Water - including children's games, the Spring Lake Rotary Club's ice cream social, spin art and free popcorn.
