Shoreline Vision officials say their village satellite office is proving to be a strategic location. The company's seventh location opened in January at 625 E. Savidge St., a site formerly occupied by G&L Chili Dogs. Dr. John Nametz, a longtime local optometrist, joined Shoreline Vision and said he brought many of his patients with him. Nametz has practiced in the village since 1982.

Many activities rescheduled for later today Weather washed out Wednesday's Family Fun Night, but Spring Lake Heritage Festival volunteers plan to heat it up today with a barbecue chicken wing contest from 4-8 p.m. at Mill Point Park. Several postponed Family Fun Night events will run simultaneously with Wings on the Water - including children's games, the Spring Lake Rotary Club's ice cream social, spin art and free popcorn.

Dr. Wallace Ewing, a local historian and author, will be the guest speaker at Spring Lake District Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 22. Ewing will be talking about his new book, "Slaves Soldiers Citizens: African Americans in Northwest Ottawa County.' The book contains information about the African Americans who settled in Northwest Ottawa County in the 1800s, including those who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Spring Lake school custodians met Monday afternoon to discuss the school board's pending decision on whether to privatize the district's cleaning services. The school board will consider the deal Wednesday at a board meeting that will follow a budget hearing. The board meets at 6:45 p.m. in the Spring Lake Middle School Media Center for the hearing, with the meeting to follow.

Todd and Diane Losee have plenty of experience putting on running events through their company, Inspirational Racing. The Spring Lake couple already organize the Coast Guard Park Trail Run and the Octoberfest marathon and half marathon. Add the Heritage Festival 5K run and walk to that list. The run takes place Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. on North Fruitport Road, next to Central Park in Spring Lake.

Pickleball, paintings and a peek into the past highlight the 26th Spring Lake Heritage Festival, which kicks off Tuesday with Winsor McCay Day and crescendos to a conclusion next Saturday with a waterfront fireworks show. New this year is a senior citizen art mixer from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn, a Tri-Cities Historical Museum presention on Spring Lake resorts at 7 p.m. Thursday at Barber School and a pickleball tournament from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Central Park.

Amid the clamor of parents and just-graduated fourth-graders milling through Holmes Elementary School's cafeteria, Mary Keeton greeted members of the crowd on her last day as the Spring Lake school's principal. Between fielding requests for pictures with students, Keeton explained that she will be turning 60 soon, and wanted to retire while she still had energy do other things. The biggest challenge she faced during her 14 years as the Holmes principal? "Letting it go,' she said.

Children, teens and adults are invited to join the 2011 summer reading clubs at Spring Lake District Library, which begin June 13. Spring Lake District Library cardholders may sign up early, beginning this week, for the reading club or programs requiring pre-registration. Bring your library card to the Youth Services desk and sign up in person. Youth can sign up for the One World, Many Stories reading club to earn prizes for the books they read and attend a variety of free entertaining programs.
