Possibly a dozen homes were without power in a Spring Lake Village neighborhood off Lake Avenue after a storm went through just after 8 this morning, said Lt. Steve Bruneau of the Spring Lake Township Fire Department. Firefighters were called at 8:16 a.m. to a home at 320 Mark St. on a possible lightning strike and the smell of electrical burning in the house. Bruneau said the residents did not hear any loud crack from lightning and there was no damage to the house itself.

The Spring Lake Village office was built by the Works Progress Administration during President Franklin Roosevelt's administration. A steady stream of children passed Sue Lavin's game at the 2011 St. Mary's Festival on Saturday afternoon - many of them stopping to try their hand at "PeeWee Pinball.' The game, she said, worked by having children launch a marble through a field of pins and bumpers, landing in a colored slot. The color determined the number of prize chips they won, which could be exchanged for toys at the prize booth.

Spring Lake District Library will host the three-part "Constitutional Controversies Series' this summer. Born in controversy, the U.S. Constitution has been debated and discussed since its inception. At the library, three experts will discuss different aspects of the Constitution, and how those principles are impacting citizens today. Events are scheduled for July 20 and 26, and Aug. 9.

During a meeting filled with more emotion than approved motions, proposed land acquisition for Phase 2 of the Grand River Greenway died on the table Tuesday night. In the process, Village Council kissed a $330,000 grant goodbye, and jeopardized future Mill Point Park expansion. Following vocal opposition from Councilman Marv VandenBosch and a handful of village residents, Councilman Steve Nauta made a motion to proceed with a resolution to appropriate the local funds for potential land acquisition, but it died for the lack of anyone seconding it.

The 2011 St. Mary's Festival will kick off with a "White Elephant' sale on Friday and Saturday, July 8-9. Lori Dinneweth, co-chairwoman of this year's sale, said thousands of items have already been donated by the general public and hundreds more are coming in each day. Books, small appliances, holiday decorations, children's toys, clothing, men's items, sporting goods, baskets and an array of glassware have been donated for the sale. Some of the items are new, Dinneweth said.

Lightning, roaring thunder and heavy rain did not stop the West Michigan Youth Sailing Association Regatta on Friday. "Considering the weather, we had to postpone," said Stacey Reierson, director of the Spring Lake Junior Sailing Association. "But once we got out there, it was fantastic.' More than 50 kids sailed in the competition's five fleets: Optimist green; Optimist red, white and blue; Butterfly; Laser; and 420.

In tribute of its centennial celebration, Spring Lake Country Club will be hosting a holiday weekend full of golf the old-fashioned way - with hickory stick clubs. Spring Lake Country Club golf professional Josh Lathwell said 50 sets of hickory clubs were rented for the celebration from Play Hickory Inc. of San Diego. There was also a need to purchase several 1920s-era golf balls, as well.

Kick off the holiday weekend with a free family movie at Spring Lake District Library at 2 p.m. Friday. The library will show the comedy "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules,' which is rated PG and is 100 minutes long. Boys and girls of all ages are welcome to attend.
