C3 Exchange leaders announced Sunday that they have listed the church building at 225 E. Exchange St. for sale at $1.9 million. Despite recent donations from the congregation and volunteer efforts to shave $3,000 a month in contract labor costs, C3 Executive Minister Ian Lawton said Sunday night that ongoing financial burdens are forcing the sale.

Spring Lake High School students were swelling with school spirit Saturday when they produced their first-ever lip dub. More than 85 students danced and dubbed to K'Naan's "Wavin' Flag' - an uptempo tune that backdropped the drama in the school's hallways, classrooms and gymnasium.

But the expectations have lingered for the Spring Lake varsity girls soccer team, and the current batch of Lakers have lived up to those expectations, and then some.

Three different players scored goals on Wednesday, lifting Spring Lake to victory over a defensive-minded Ludington squad in the semifinal round of the Lakes Eight Conference girls soccer tournament. With the win, the top-seed Lakers advance to the tournament championship game on Monday. They'll host rival Fruitport, a 1-0 winner over Orchard View in Wednesday's other semifinal contest.

Rich Hyde has made the round of coaching at the lower levels at Spring Lake. On Monday, Hyde was given his chance to prove himself at the varsity level. Hyde, who has served as the Lakers' junior varsity boys basketball coach the past seven years, was named the head varsity girls coach at Spring Lake during the district's Monday night board meeting. Hyde is a math teacher and a counselor at Spring Lake Middle School. He and his wife, Angela, have two daughters: Julie, 7, and Anna, 5.

A fire protection fee issue that has been smoldering for years has been put to rest by Spring Lake Village Council. A 1976 agreement requires that the village pay Spring Lake Township $12,000 a year for fire protection. Village Council on Monday voted to pay the second half of this year's payment, after holding back payment during discussions with township officials over the last several months. "We're going to have to continue paying this every year,' Councilman Marv VandenBosch said. "There's no way out of it.'

In anticipation of Winsor McCay Day at Spring Lake District Library on Tuesday, June 14, the library is hosting a cartoon caption contest and a trivia challenge. McCay was a pioneer in the field of animation who spent his formative years in Spring Lake during the late 1800s.

The Spring Lake school board approved layoffs for 16 teachers and seven full-time equivalent paraprofessionals during a meeting Monday night that brought out more than 80 members of the community. The layoffs are a move to close a projected $3.1 million budget shortfall, Spring Lake Public Schools Superintendent Dennis Furton said. The board had previously voted to use $900,000 of their fund balance, shrinking the shortfall to $2.2 million. "This is the most difficult decision we faced as a board,' Furton said.

The fifth annual Spring Lake Ride of Silence is Wednesday. The bicycle ride in silence began in 2003 in Dallas, Texas, to raise awareness of cyclists on the roads. It has grown into a worldwide movement. Last year, rides took place in all 50 states and 25 countries. There were 32 Ride of Silence locations in Michigan alone. The 2010 Spring Lake ride had 86 participants. The ride will begin at Central Park in Spring Lake, behind Ace Hardware on Savidge Street. Registration begins at 6:40 p.m. and the ride will start at 7 p.m.
