Spring Lake's junior varsity and freshmen football teams combined forces to defeat Orchard View on Thursday. The Cardinals do not have a freshman team, so the JV played the first half and into the third quarter, then the freshmen played the remainder of the game. Charlie Warber of the JV team scored four touchdowns for the Lakers, while Ross Underberg added a 20-yard touchdown run.

Pilot and aerial photographer Marge Beaver will share her aerial photographs during a presentation at Spring Lake District Library at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. Beaver will talk about how her plane is outfitted, what type of camera and lenses she uses, and her custom color lab. With more than 25 years experience, Beaver has taken photos of nearly every state in the United States. Her bird's-eye view photos have graced the covers of more than 40 books and magazines.

For the second consecutive year, the Lakes Eight Conference will hold a league-wide cancer awareness night on Friday. The event, called "Tackle Cancer Together,' will feature conference teams wearing purple and white jerseys, which will bear the names of people who have either passed away to cancer, survived cancer, or are currently battling the disease. Both Spring Lake and Fruitport will play games on the road on Friday, so they will wear white uniforms with purple lettering.

St. Mary's Parish School in Spring Lake is inviting the community to bring their pets - large and small - to its annual "Blessing of the Pets' at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5. The ceremony will be held in the school parking lot "green space' at 421 E. Exchange St. Father Dan DePew, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, will preside over the gathering.

A blown penalty kick late in the first half, then a botched defensive assignment early in the second half left the Spring Lake varsity boys soccer team looking up at rival Fruitport on the scoreboard. Lakers' senior captain Kyle Kendall wasn't worried. "They went ahead, and we looked into each other's eyes and that picks you up,' Kendall said. "We knew we had each others' back.'

A sledding hill at Mill Point Park Preserve is slip-sliding away - to the landfill. Village Council on Monday night approved a budget adjustment that includes hauling excavated materials from the Grand River Greenway project to a landfill. That includes the 650 cubic yards that have been mounded between Village Cove Marina and School Street in anticipation of being sculpted into a sledding hill.

Spring Lake's girls golfers hosted Kenowa Hills on Monday and scored a 201-241 win over the visiting Knights. Ginny Olszewski paced the Lakers with a round of 45, followed by Chezney Peel with a 47. Tori Kihnke added a 52, and Faith Lee shot a 57 for Spring Lake. The Lakers compete in their final regular-season meet on Thursday as they take on Whitehall and Muskegon Catholic, then will travel to Big Rapids for the Division 3 regional meet on Oct. 6.

Shred Docs will be providing a free and confidential document shredding service at Spring Lake District Library from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The public is invited to bring the materials they would like shredded to the Shred Docs mobile unit, which will be parked in the parking lot of the library, 123 E. Exchange St. There is a limit of 100 pounds per person that will be shredded. Shredding sensitive personal documents like canceled checks, tax records and credit card statements is a good way to help prevent identity theft and credit card fraud, experts say.

Despite all the tail wagging, the proceeds from a benefit wash in Spring Lake on Saturday afternoon didn't go to the dogs. The money raised at the event will help cover medical expenses for an uninsured Spring Lake family. Zachery Bugielski, 18, suffered a closed-head injury when he fell from his skateboard on Aug. 23. Zachery's memory was affected by bleeding on the brain, but his recovering is going well - according to his mother, Amy Van Strate.

Senior Lydia Gleason captured first place in the 100-yard breaststroke at Saturday's Spring Lake Invitational, but she was the lone Laker at the top of the podium in the talented field of competitors. In the end, the Lakers settled for third-place overall, trailing runaway winner Byron Center (555 points) and runner-up Mona Shores (295). Spring Lake totaled 287 points. Fellow Coastal Conference foe Manistee was next with 201, followed by Rockford's ‘B' team with 197. Ludington was last in the eight-team field with 164.
