Baseball fans and baseball card collectors of all ages are invited to attend a free presentation by baseball card collector Jeff Kless at Spring Lake District Library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4. Kless has more than 40 years experience collecting baseball cards and more than 700,000 cards in his personal collection - some from as early as 1910. Kless will talk about the history of baseball cards, how licensing and logos have changed over the years, what criteria appraisers use when evaluating the value of cards, and how card collectors can buy and sell using eBay.

Rabideau roared to his players, along with several hundred Lakers' students who had rushed the field. It's tough to argue with Rabideau following the Lakers' stunning 7-6 win over heavily-favored Fruitport on a picture-perfect night for football at Spring Lake's Thomas E. Grabinski Field.

The 100 (or more) Women Who Care group recently awarded its first grant of their second funding cycle to The People Center of Spring Lake. Approximately 320 women have signed commitments to support this endeavor, translating into more than $32,000 donated to The People Center. "This donation is amazing,' People Center Director Karen Reenders said. "It's given completely in the spirit of The People Center, which is ‘neighbor helping neighbor.''

The Rev. Lary Jackson's job requires a lot of walking. He doesn't mind, he says, because it's for a good cause. Jackson works for Church World Service - a cooperative ministry of 36 Christian denominations that organizes C.R.O.P. hunger walks throughout northern Indiana and West Michigan. Jackson, who still makes his home in Spring Lake, will be participating in 10 different walks to help raise awareness about the hunger and poverty that is rampant throughout the world.

Spring Lake's varsity girls swimming and diving squad was determined at defending its home pool during a tri-meet on Wednesday at the Spring Lake Aquatic Center, but there were some factors involved that prevented the home team from being in top form.

As a home economics teacher, Jan Bussard taught her students that what's on the inside of a garment is just as important as what's on the outside. Perhaps back in the mid-1950s she was talking only literally, trying to teach the youngsters at Spring Lake Junior High the importance of strong stitches. But three of Bussard's former students know now that their beloved teacher was laying a pattern of wisdom that they carry with them today - more than a half-century later.

The death of a Coopersville man found in the Grand River behind his boat in August has been ruled accidental, Detective Corey Allard of the Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Department said today. Michael Kirby, 51, was reported missing the afternoon of Aug. 20 by a friend, James Cunningham. Cunningham was supposed to meet Kirby that morning to work on his boat in the Village Cove Marina, 900 W. Savidge St. in Spring Lake, Allard said.

Spring Lake remained in second-place in the Lakes Eight Conference behind leading Fruitport following the Lakers' four-game victory over rival Fremont on Tuesday. Spring Lake coach Sarah Bulthuis said improved defensive play led the Lakers to the 25-18, 25-10, 20-25, 25-15 victory.
