Dr. Jared Van Ittersum has set some clear goals for himself. He wants to be part of the most technological dental practice in West Michigan. And he wants to be known as a dentist who is willing to give back to his community. Van Ittersum, 30, who grew up in Spring Lake, is well on his way to achieving those goals. He and his partner - Dr. Elias Achey - now own four family dental practices in West Michigan. Van Ittersum and Achey manage the Spring Lake Family Dentistry office at 102 Buchanan.

Friends and co-workers of Brenda Blahnik have set up an assistance fund for the family of the Spring Lake woman who was critically injured in a work accident Aug. 27. Blahnik, 47, suffered head and back injuries when the mechanical lift from which she was working tipped over and fell onto the cement in the pool area of the Spring Lake Community Fitness and Aquatic Center. She remains in an induced coma at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Spring Lake sophomore Ryan Fedewa won't be doing any bodybuilding flex-offs after his matches this fall, but added strength - especially on his serve - has been a welcome addition to his game at No. 1 singles for the Lakers varsity tennis squad.

Spring Lake's volleyball team has coped with heavy hearts this week after one its players, junior Emily Blahnik, has dealt with a family tragedy. Blahnik's mother, Brenda, was involved in an accident at the Spring Lake Aquatic Center on Saturday, when a lift she was working on fell over. Emily has spent the week staying by her mother's side at Spectrum Health Hospital in Grand Rapids. Brenda was put into an induced coma and recently underwent surgery to relieve pressure on her brain.

Village officials are attempting to turn lemons into frozen lemonade by taking unwanted material from the Grand River Greenway excavation work, capping it and sculpting it into a recreational sledding hill. While carving the nonmotorized path through the wetlands west of School Street earlier this month, contractors discovered trace amounts of metals and chunks of concrete in the soil. The cost of hauling the 650 cubic yards of material to a qualified landfill would have cost an estimated $80,000, according to environmental consultants.

The first phase of the Grand River Greenway is completely roughed in and expected to be open for pedestrian, bike and wheelchair traffic by mid-October, according to Village Manager Ryan Cotton. Work continues on the boardwalks through the wetlands west of School Street. Viewing areas are also under construction, the manager said.

Spring Lake's varsity boys tennis team went 3-0 at Monday's home tri-meet, scoring victories over North Muskegon, Western Michigan Christian and Whitehall. The Lakers beat the Norsemen, 5-3, scoring wins in all four doubles flights. Spring Lake also swept the doubles in a 6-2 win over Whitehall, then won at every flight except No. 4 singles in a 7-1 victory over WMC. Sophomore Ryan Fedewa went 3-0 at No. 1 singles, scoring easy wins against WMC and Whitehall but needing three sets to beat North Muskegon senior John Snider, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.

Exchange Street will reopen to traffic today after undergoing a Safe Routes to School makeover. The village thoroughfare now sports traffic calming devices called "bumpouts' at the intersections with Prospect and Williams streets.

Amateur photographers are invited to hone their skills during a free photography class at Spring Lake District Library during the month of September. Photography enthusiast Gert Wallis will share his expertise and show attendees how to make the most of their camera equipment during the three-part class. It will be held Wednesdays from 7-8:30 p.m.: Sept. 7, 14 and 21. Attendees are encouraged to bring their cameras and questions.

A Spring Lake woman remains in critical condition at Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids today following an accident Saturday night at the Spring Lake Aquatic and Fitness Center where she is employed. Brenda Blahnik suffered spinal and head injuries in the incident, according to her husband, Andy Blahnik. She is in the surgical critical care area at the Meijer Heart Center where she is recovering from spinal surgery, which was performed on Sunday, he said.
