One of Michigan's top Republicans in the 1990s is allowed to continue getting his $79,000 a year state pension regardless of the outcome of his trial on sex charges involving children. Documents obtained under Michigan's Freedom of Information Act state Phillip Arthurhultz has a monthly pension benefit of $6,620, or $79,440 annually, from his 15 years representing the Muskegon area, according to The Associated Press.

West Michigan authorities are asking for the public's help in finding two gun-toting men who robbed a Grand Rapids-area bank and who were caught on a security camera. The Allegan County Sheriff's Department has released photos of the suspects in the robbery, which happened about 10:30 a.m. Monday at a Chemical Bank branch in the unincorporated community of Moline. It's in Leighton Township, about 15 miles south of Grand Rapids. Police said the bank's employees and customers weren't hurt.

Authorities are investigating claims that thousands of dollars are missing from T-shirt sales to benefit a foundation that was created to honor a Michigan basketball player who died in March. The Allegan County Sheriff's Department said its investigation could be completed in a few days. More than 1,000 T-shirts were sold with assurances that money would go to Wes Leonard's family or the Wes Leonard Heart Team foundation.

A traffic stop involving a riding lawn mower in Allegan County has led to a methamphetamine bust. Allegan County Sheriff's deputies stopped a man riding the mower early Sunday near the village of Martin. Police said the man was arrested on suspicion of possessing meth and components to make the drug. Authorities said the man had a prior history of meth charges.

The U.S. Department of Justice has announced arson charges against a Muskegon landlord. Gerald Singer is also charged with insurance fraud and filing false federal income tax returns. Singer is charged with allegedly causing nine fires dating back to 1993, including a house he owned in Grand Haven's Olde Towne neighborhood. The indictment alleges he had legal interest in the following properties destroyed by fire: March 1, 1993; 530 Elliott St. in Grand Haven July 23, 1995; 2809 Hoyt in Muskegon Heights

One man was taken to Zeeland Community Hospital following a scaffold accident Thursday morning at his home, said Robinson Township Fire Chief Paul VanVelzen. J.B. Smith and another man were shingling a building at 9861 Pierce St. when the scaffold on which they were working detached from the side of the building. The men fell about 7 feet to the ground, the chief said. One man landed on his feet and was OK, VanVelzen said. Smith caught his thumb on something and received a "nasty slice,' he said. Smith was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

A state corrections officer was allegedly caught during a traffic stop with heroin and tobacco that investigators believe he was planning to smuggle into a prison in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where he worked. The Michigan Department of Corrections said the 17-year veteran of the department was arrested Wednesday in Mackinac County. The arrest was part of an investigation that involved the Michigan State Police and the Straits Area Narcotics Enforcement Team.

Three people were taken by ambulance to the hospital after a rear-end accident at a Robinson Township intersection about 11:30 a.m. Thursday. A car with a woman and two young children inside was slowing to make a turn onto southbound 120th Avenue from M-45 when it was hit in the rear by a car driven by a young female, said Robinson Township Fire Chief Paul VanVelzen. The young woman said she was looking at an ambulance broken down on the side of the road, and didn't notice the other car slowing in front of her, VanVelzen said.

UPDATE: Preliminary results of an ongoing autopsy examination have determined that Phebe Hall's official cause of death was drowning, WZZM-TV reported Thursday night. The police investigation continues. The body of Hall, 54, was found on the beach at Holland State Park on Thursday morning. The Park Township woman was last seen by her husband at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. Rescue crews began their search at about 10 p.m. Wednesday. A beach walker found the body at around 6 a.m. the next day.

A Coopersville-area man died late Wednesday afternoon after falling from a ladder, said Sgt. Keith Garvelink of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. James Aaron Blehm, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene after efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, Garvelink said. Emergency personnel were called to the 9000 block of Leonard Road at 5:15 p.m. Garvelink said Blehm was trimming trees on his property from a ladder. A falling limb struck the ladder and caused the man to fall to the ground, a distance of greater than 20 feet, Garvelink said.
