A small plane crashed in a field near the southwestern Michigan community of Marshall on Sunday evening, critically injuring the pilot. Authorities said the plane spiraled down and crashed west of Brooks Field Airport. A 59-year-old Marshall man was flying a plane with a glider attached behind it by a cable. The crash in Calhoun County's Marshall Township happened shortly after the glider was released. Airport Manager John Riske said a person flying in the glider was unharmed. The cause of the crash was under investigation.

The body of a 51-year-old Coopersville man was recovered from the Grand River after a friend reported him missing late Saturday afternoon. Emergency personnel were called to the Village Cove Marina, 900 W. Savidge St. in Spring Lake, at 5:36 p.m. on a report of a missing person, Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Chief Roger DeYoung said. Village Cove Harbormaster James Cunningham called police to report that Michael Kirby, who had a 41.5-foot Sea Ray at slip No. 19, was missing and that one of his sandals was found floating in the water.

A lightning strike may have started a fire which destroyed a Crockery Township home early Saturday afternoon. Firefighters from several departments responded to a rural home at 9878 Taft Street just before 2 p.m. when neighbors saw smoke in the area after a storm passed through. "It wouldn't be surprising if it was lightning because we heard a lot of really loud ones (booms),' said neighbor Desiree Whipple. Nobody was home at the time, but a passer-by, who noticed the fire, did save the family cat, Whipple said.

Authorities tentatively have identified the remains of a woman found stuffed in a suitcase and floating in a creek as a 32-year-old southeast Michigan woman. WDIV-TV reported Friday that Pam Prpich had been missing since last week and lived in a condominium near the creek where the suitcase was found. Police said Prpich's brother had been looking for her and was alerted to the suitcase by people boating on the creek, about 20 miles southwest of Detroit. He opened the suitcase Thursday night.

A girl who was molested by her high school softball coach when she was 14 years old will eventually forget the ordeal, a defense lawyer told a Michigan judge in arguing for a more lenient sentence. Thomas Warda said at the sentencing hearing for Mickey Gotwalt, 52, that his client "didn't kill this girl,' according to a court transcript obtained by The Saginaw News.

A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Holland rescued two people in Lake Macatawa on Thursday afternoon. A man and woman, both of whom were wearing life jackets, were rescued. Their names and ages are not being released. The couple was spotted while Coast Guard crews were underway on a routine patrol aboard a 25-foot small response boat. The crew saw the two people fall into the water after their 15-foot sailing vessel capsized at about 2:15 p.m.

Grand Haven City Councilman Ed Nieuwenhuis, 69, and his wife Sandra, 68, were injured Thursday morning in a chain reaction crash on Interstate 96 near Marne. Sgt. Dennis Luce of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said the incident occurred at about 9:15 a.m. when Nieuwenhuis' vehicle, which was sitting in a traffic back-up on eastbound I-96, was rear-ended by a Lincoln Navigator driven by 65-year-old William Krause of Spring Lake. "The traffic was backed up due to an unrelated vehicle fire,' Luce said.

The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety has recently recovered property stolen from motor vehicles during the months of June, July and August. These types of incidents often go unreported because the victim does not feel there is a chance to recover the property or be compensated for the loss by their insurance company. Because so few are reported, GHDPS is unable to return recovered property to the rightful owner, said Lt. Renee Freeman.

A 22-year-old Grand Ledge man has been charged with murder and child abuse in the May death of his former girlfriend's 3-month-old daughter. Joshua Piercefield was arraigned Wednesday on the charges in the death of Olivia Faith Truax. He faces life in prison if convicted, and was ordered held without bond. Prosecutors didn't detail how Olivia died. Court documents said the girl, who lived in Eaton Rapids, may have been dropped May 6. She died four days later.

A father and son team was arrested early Wednesday after a traffic stop in Holland revealed the men had more than $30,000 worth of stolen property in their vehicle, said Lt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Holland Police stopped the 1999 Jeep Cherokee for a traffic violation about 4:20 a.m. Wednesday, Bennett said. Police noted suspicious property in the vehicle and, upon investigation, saw a tag from Sawyer Nursery on one of the items.
