Fruitport's Class B regional championship victory over Grant featured a blowout, a nail-biter and a big-time comeback - all wrapped up in one.

Asa Kelly, a 1996 Grand Haven graduate, is piling up the state titles as a head coach at Benzie Central High School. Kelly guided the Benzie Central girls track team to a Division 3 state title on June 4, and this past Saturday, the Huskies were able to collect more hardware after claiming the title at the Division 3 cross country finals at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. Kelly coaches the team along with his wife, Traci. The Huskies tallied 126 points as a team, which beat runner-up Kent City by 20.

Grand Haven varsity girls basketball coach Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer remembers driving to Kenowa Hills to watch a promising group of fifth-grade basketball players, because really, it's never too early to scout the talent in your program. Two that stood out on the undefeated middle school team were Alex Law and Kaeding Skelton. Seven years later, the duo added another chapter to their basketball careers on Wednesday, as both signed national letters-of-intent to play college basketball during the early signing period.

Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach. The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season. But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.
