Grand Haven easily took care of Hudsonville in the opening round of the O-K Red Conference soccer tournament on Thursday, winning 3-0. The Buccaneers, the No. 2 seed, had little trouble with the seventh-seeded Eagles. Nate Rose, Willie Bennick and Jake Vanderlaan scored goals for the Bucs, while Willie Bennick and Chad Buitenhuis earning assists. Ethan Beswick recorded the shutout in goal, thanks in part to a strong showing by defenders Ryan Schoonover, Kevin LaCroix, Nick Kline, Andrew Wadaga and Matt Davis.

Spring Lake diver Wilhelmina Francisco scored a pool record of 227.20 at Manistee HIgh School on Thursday, helping lead the Lakers' swimming and diving team to a key victory over one of their top competitors in the Coastal Conference, 103-83. Francisco's effort led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Lakers in diving, as Makayla Boyink placed second (164.75) and Paige Rubleski was third (162.25).

Grand Haven's varsity volleyball team coasted to an easy win over Muskegon on Thursday, 25-12, 25-11, 25-9. The Buccaneers are now 3-2 in O-K Red play and 26-11 overall. "We've been working all week on staying focused from the first serve to the last, and I think we did that,' coach Katy Walters said. "We did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game and minimizing our errors.' Walters was pleased with the play of Krysteena Davis (seven kills, two blocks) and Taylor Craymer (nine kills, two aces).

Don Kelly and Delmon Young hit first-inning home runs, Doug Fister and the Detroit bullpen held on and the Tigers edged the New York Yankees 3-2 Thursday night to win the deciding Game 5 of the AL playoff series. The Tigers escaped jams all game and advanced to the AL championship series against Texas. Jose Valverde shut down the Yankees in the ninth as the Tigers eliminated New York in the division series for the second time in six seasons.

Each season, Spring Lake's Charlie Bassett's varsity tennis team has certain expectations to meet or exceed. It starts with winning conference titles and keeping the Lakers' streak of state title berths alive. The Lakers will be vying for a ninth-straight trip to the Division 3 finals today, as Spring Lake plays host to the regional tournament. All flights will be held at Spring Lake High School except for No. 4 doubles, which will be played at Fruitport High School.

Grand Haven's girls cross country team scored an impressive victory over the Rockford Rams on Wednesday while the Buccaneers' boys were not so fortunate. Rockford won the boys' race, ending Grand Haven's streak of 17 consecutive dual meet victories dating back to the 2009 season. "This is a day I will remember forever,' said Bucs' coach Greg Russick, whose team scored a 21-40 win over the Rams and a 15-50 win over Muskegon.

Spring Lake's varsity boys soccer team advanced to Monday's Lakes Eight Conference tournament title game with a mercy-rule shortened 8-0 win over Ludington on Wednesday. The Lakers' opponent in the championship match will be Orchard View, which held on for a 1-0 win over Fruitport on Wednesday. Riley Kammeraad scored twice for Spring Lake, while single goals came from Kyle Kendall, Kaleb Winter, Adam Clauss, Austin Gabris, Tanner Berg and K.J. Sanchez. Clauss added three assists for Spring Lake.

Curtis Granderson was hugely popular player when he roamed center field and batted leadoff for the Detroit Tigers. On Tuesday, Granderson broke the hearts of all those Tigers fans who used to cheer him on as he made a pair of truly spectacular defensive plays, helping his new team - the New York Yankees - even up the best-of-5 American League Divisional Series at 2-2 and forcing a deciding Game 5 on Thursday in New York.

Spring Lake junior Brittany Beeler's speed on a straightaway on a cross country course is unmatched in the Lakes Eight Conference this fall. Unfortunately, the multiple twists and turns on the course at Rycenga Park played as an advantage to the field trying to catch the talented Laker on Tuesday in the second conference jamboree.
