Senior Lydia Gleason captured first place in the 100-yard breaststroke at Saturday's Spring Lake Invitational, but she was the lone Laker at the top of the podium in the talented field of competitors. In the end, the Lakers settled for third-place overall, trailing runaway winner Byron Center (555 points) and runner-up Mona Shores (295). Spring Lake totaled 287 points. Fellow Coastal Conference foe Manistee was next with 201, followed by Rockford's ‘B' team with 197. Ludington was last in the eight-team field with 164.

Spring Lake's boys cross country team ran to its first invitational title of the season on Saturday, as the Lakers captured the title at the Oakridge Invitational in Muskegon. Juniors Austin Elliot and Andrew Cole were the top finishers for Spring Lake, taking eighth and ninth place overall.

The rain held off for a majority of Grand Haven's trip to the Holland Quad tennis tournament on Saturday, with just a pair of matches rained out. Bucs' coach Jeremy Case said his squad was plagued by too many losses in third-set tie breakers and not enough consistent play throughout the tournament in their fourth-place finish.

Fruitport battled tough in Saturday's Portage Central Invitational, a tournament stacked with top-ranked teams in all classes. The Trojans were a step away from the finals, but were eliminated by Lake Orion, the No. 9-ranked team in Class A, in the semifinals, 25-21, 25-21. Rockford, ranked No. 3 in Class A, slayed the Dragons in the finals to earn the Gold Division title.

Grand Haven's varsity soccer team remained undefeated on the season with a 3-0 win over Forest Hills Central on Saturday. The Buccaneers scored all three of their goals after halftime, starting with Andrew Byrne's scrpapy goal off an assist from Willie Bennick and Jake Vanderlaan. Minutes later, Vanderlaan scored, assisted by Andrew Byrne. The Bucs' final goal came from Spencer Toepfer on a great pass from Vanderlaan.

Lakers' head football coach Jerry Rabideau gave the shortest postgame speech of his career Friday night. "This is the greatest victory in Spring Lake football history!' Rabideau roared to his players, along with several hundred Lakers' students who had rushed the field. It's tough to argue with Rabideau following the Lakers' stunning 7-6 win over heavily-favored Fruitport on a picture-perfect night for football at Spring Lake's Thomas E. Grabinski Field.

Grand Haven used a dominating defensive performance and another explosive offensive showing to overwhelm Hudsonville on Friday, 28-6. The Buccaneers held the bruising Eagles' running attack to just 85 yards on 33 carries. On offense, Bucs' quarterback Scott Staal continued his outstanding senior season, completing 15-of-22 passes for 262 yards and three scores. Staal hooked up with his favorite target, Danny Cotter, six times for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior Varsity Grand Haven improved to 5-0 with a 13-8 win over Hudsonville. The Bucs' offense was paced by Cody Jonas and Braeton Ardel, who each rushed for over 100 yards. Karl Johnson connected with Sawyer Jacobs on a 30-yard scoring pass to put the Buccaneers on top for good in the second half. On defense, Grand Haven limited Hudsonville to just 61 yards rushing. Dakota Juarez and Luke Averill each had eight tackles while Connor Morley and Tyler Tippens dominated up front.

With Grand Haven's Alyssia Land and West Ottawa's Lauren DeShaw sprinting toward the finish of the 400-yard freestyle relay Thursday evening, you never would have known that there was nothing tangible at stake. Land may have been touched out at the wall by the Panthers' DeShaw, but the heart that the Bucs' foursome showed in that final race put a smile on the face of Grand Haven coach Doug Thorne.

Spring Lake's varsity girls swimming and diving squad was determined at defending its home pool during a tri-meet on Wednesday at the Spring Lake Aquatic Center, but there were some factors involved that prevented the home team from being in top form.
