Dan Tebo, fishing aboard D'Anne Marie, landed the biggest fish during Saturday's Big King fishing contest and took home the top prize of $1,625. Tebo and his crew pulled in a 21.5-pound king salmon. That fish was less than a pound heavier than the 20.9-pounder weighed in by Chi Klein, fishing aboard Hit Man. Brian Dutmers of Great Lakes Chili Dogs brought in a 19.75-pound king, while Mike Harvey, fishing aboard KC 1, landed a 19.75-pound fish. Jim Stull and his crew on Sweet Smoked won the biggest non-king competition with a 16.3-pound lake trout.

Spring Lake's varsity girls cross country squad captured first place in the Gold Division (Division 2 teams) at Saturday's Sparta Invitational, sparked by five runners placing 15th or better. "We came into the meet knowing there were a handful of the top teams in the state and we wanted to use it as a measuring stick to continue building from,' said Spring Lake coach Aaron Andres. "Our conference and regional assignments are going to be challenging this season and races like today help us become better runners.'

Both Fruitport and Grand Haven struggled at Saturday's Fruitport Invitational volleyball touranment. The Trojans failed to repeat their championship run a year ago at their home tourney and finished with a disappointing 1-3 record. East Grand Rapids was crowned champions, beating Traverse City West in the finals. Fruitport's lone victory was a 25-16, 25-9 win over Ravenna. Senior setter Lauren Hazekamp led the Trojans in both assists (84) and kills (25), while also recording 37 digs, five aces and two blocks. Defensive specialst Lindsay

Spring Lake's varsity boys tennis team scored eight points to place third out of four teams at Saturday's Holland Quad. Mitch Davis scored one point for the Lakers by going 1-2 at No. 3 singles. His win came against Lowell. Harrison Palmer and Stuart Velarde went 2-1 at No. 2 doubles, with wins over Lowell and Holland. Jonah Yoshonis and Erik Johnson also went 2-1 and were declared flight champions at third doubles after scoring wins over Lowell and Holland. Brenden Peel and Josh Cole were unbeaten at fourth doubles.

Host Western Michigan Christian came from two goals behind Saturday to tie non-conference Muskegon Reeths-Puffer 2-2 late regulation and take the lead 3-2 in overtime, only to lose 4-3 after the Rockets won in a shootout. The Rockets scored two goals in the game's first three minutes, only to see the Warriors tie the game with two goals of their own in the span of less than two minutes. Kameron Fowler gave the Rockets a 1-0 lead just 21 seconds into the game and Eric Hilt scored 2 minutes later to make it 2-0 for the visitors.

As tears welled up in his eyes, Grand Haven senior Jeremy Lattig collected his grandmother, Lee Lattig, in a smothering hug. His emotion had nothing to do with the Buccaneers' 38-14 win over Jenison, which had wrapped up just moments ago. A victory on the football field seemed insignificant to the victory Lee Lattig scored over cancer several years ago.

Once Grand Haven had a firm grasp on what Jenison's offensive attack was going to be, the Wildcats had no chance. The Buccaneers believed Jenison would show a veer offense with a heavy focus on the quarterback option, but after pregame warm-ups, a week full of preparation was scrapped.

Spring Lake scored 41 points in the third quarter alone on its way to a wild 69-40 victory over host Tri-County on Friday. The Lakers scored the final 14 points of the second quarter to lead 28-21 at halftime, then exploded offensively, thanks in part to a rash of Vikings' miscues, in the third. After T.J. Kriger scored on a 68-yard touchdown run early in the third, Tri-County's Connor VanderHyde returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a score.

Ludington's passing game, led by talented quarterback Boyd Meeker, provided a little flair at Fruitport on Friday, but the Orioles had no answer for another dominating offensive showing by the Trojans. Senior running back Mike Reyes carried the ball 14 times for 157 yards and four touchdowns, keeping the No. 7-ranked Trojans undefeated at 4-0 following their 49-27 victory against the visiting Orioles. Eleven-year-old Ezekiel DeJonge can check off one of the items on his bucket list: running a marathon. The Spring Lake boy ran 1 mile in the Old Boys' Brewhouse Oktoberfest Kids Race on Friday night - prepping for today's 5K run and completing the 26 miles that are equal to a marathon within a year. "It's cool,' Ezekiel said. "I was finishing my marathon and I'm running a 5K (today).'
