Prep roundup: SL tennis scores win over possible regional foe

Spring Lake scored a 6-2 win over Comstock Park on Friday in boys tennis action. The Lakers were without several key team members, which bumped senior Nic Parnell, typically a fixture at No. 1 doubles, up to No. 1 singles. Parnell responded with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Max Bent. The Lakers' Gabriel Guzmam won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Sean Dusterwinkle won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.

Tigers win Central Division!

The Detroit Tigers won the American League Central Division late Friday night in Oakland, Calif. The Tigers beat the A's 3-1, capturing their first-ever Central Division title. More details are in Saturday's Tribune.

Bucs display their purple pride

Abby Cole celebrated her 16th birthday on Thursday the same way she's celebrated every other day on the volleyball court - by dominating the opposition. Cole, the Bucs' 6-foot-5 junior who has committed to play for the University of Michigan, recorded team highs with 12 kills, four aces and four blocks, helping the Buccaneers held off O-K Red Conference foe Hudsonville, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 on the Bucs' Purple Out celebration.

GH golf struggles at East Kentwood

Grand Haven's girls golfers took on the top two teams in the O-K Red Conference on one of the league's toughest courses on Thursday and came up well short. Grandville and East Kentwood each shot a 200 on Kentwood's home course, Stone Water Country Club. Grandville won the match on a tiebreaker. The Buccaneers shot a 220. "This was a tough course,' Bucs' coach Roger Glass said. "Grandville and East Kentwood have been shooting in the 180s. The greens were really slick and they gave the girls some trouble.'

Swim and dive roundup: Lakers pull out exciting win

Spring Lake pulled out an exciting victory over the co-op team from Mona Shores/Reeths-Puffer on Thursday at the Spring Lake Aquatic Center by a 93.5-91.5 final. "This was a very close meet, too close for comfort,' Spring Lake coach Nikkie Theune said. "Tonight's win didn't just come down to getting first place finishes, it was the seconds, thirds, fourths and fifths that really stepped up to the plate tonight and brought the win home. I am very proud of every one of them.'

Prep soccer: Local teams continue to dominate

Grand Haven senior Jake Vanderlaan scored a hat trick - all in the opening 20 minutes - leading the Buccaneers to a dominating 5-0 victory over rival West Ottawa on Thursday. Nate Rose assisted on Vanderlaan's first goal. Mike Moran set up the second, and the third was unassisted. As the salmon action increases in the river systems, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminded anglers that snagging in Michigan waters is unlawful, contrary to websites and rumors that say the law has changed. New law allows younger hunters in Michigan

A change in state law that took effect Sept. 1 makes it legal for 10- and 11- year olds to hunt deer, bear or elk with firearms in Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources announced. The change is not reflected in the 2011 Hunting and Trapping Digest as the publication went to press before the law was changed. The regulations change was part of the Hunter Heritage Act, which creates a new mentored hunting program and eliminates the minimum age requirements for hunting in 2012.
