Veteran soccer coach David Hulings will soon be coaching both the boys and girls soccer teams at Western Michigan Christian High. He resigned earlier this week as the girls varsity soccer coach at Fruitport High School after 19 seasons. Hulings is in his seventh season coaching the WMC boys where his teams have won state championships in 2007 and 2010. He is the only girls coach Fruitport has had and he posted a 213-118-25 record with the Trojans. Hulings plans to expand his ministry at WMC.

Spring Lake placed first and Fruitport second in the Lakes Eight portion of Thursday's Fremont Invitational, which served as both an open invite and a league jamboree. Reeths-Puffer was the overall champion. The Lakers took second at 185, and Fruitport shot a 196. Elinor Adams paced the Lakers with a 90, followed by Chezney Peel with a 96, Tori Kihnke with a 98, and Karissa Raschke with a 102. Carly Hoekenga shot a 101 to lead the Trojans. Jenna Visniski shot a 105, Abbie McNitt a 106, and Kaylee McWilliams a 112.

Thursday night's final scores: Grand Haven beat Traverse City West, 48-21. Spring Lake dominated Ludington, 50-27. Fruitport beat Newaygo, 30-10. And in college football action Thursday night, Grand Valley State shut out Western Oregon, 23-0. For details on the games, click here.

On a night that it payed tribute to former defensive coach Larry Rueger prior to Thursday's Lakes Eight Conference opener against Newaygo, Fruitport's defense would have made its old coach proud. The Trojans' rugged 'D' made a big statement with the game on the line, coming up with a key interception in the end zone that locked up Fruitport's 30-10 win over visiting Newaygo.

The second week of high school football begins tonight. Tonight's games include Grand Haven hosting Traverse City West, Spring Lake at Ludington and Fruitport hosting Newaygo. The latter two games are Lakes Eight Conference openers for all four teams. WGHN (92.1 FM) is broadcasting the Grand Haven game, starting at 7 p.m. Check back here to get the scores.

Spring Lake sophomore Ryan Fedewa won't be doing any bodybuilding flex-offs after his matches this fall, but added strength - especially on his serve - has been a welcome addition to his game at No. 1 singles for the Lakers varsity tennis squad.

A 3-0 spanking at the hands of Hudsonville Unity Christian last fall was still on the minds of Grand Haven varsity boys soccer players 12 months later. The Buccaneers were on the verge of avenging that loss, leading 2-1 in the final 10 minutes of Wednesday's rematch before the Crusaders struck back with a late goal. The two state powerhouses settled for a 2-2 tie in a highly competitive showdown at Buccaneer Stadium.

Spring Lake's varsity boys soccer team continued its torrid start to the season with an impressive 4-0 victory at Holland Christian on Wednesday. The Lakers are now 4-0 on the year. "The guys do a lot of hard work,' Lakers' coach Jeremy Thelen said. "Plus, we scored at the perfect times. We scored five minutes into the game, five minutes before halftime, and five minutes into the second half. We really took the wind out of them.'

Spring Lake's volleyball team has coped with heavy hearts this week after one its players, junior Emily Blahnik, has dealt with a family tragedy. Blahnik's mother, Brenda, was involved in an accident at the Spring Lake Aquatic Center on Saturday, when a lift she was working on fell over. Emily has spent the week staying by her mother's side at Spectrum Health Hospital in Grand Rapids. Brenda was put into an induced coma and recently underwent surgery to relieve pressure on her brain.
