For Grand Haven High School lacrosse players Hillary Land, Sarah Shaw, Mackenzie Yoas, Mackenzie Klingenberg and Carlee Klingenberg, the summer of 2011 has been one to remember. The Grand Haven girls played on the Grand Rapids-based Oasis Lacrosse Club, coached by Aquinas College head coach Frank Rogers and Aquinas junior Kati Rogers. The team competed in three multi-state tournaments this summer, bringing home three first-place trophies.

I recently heard a statistic that the average golfer - who obviously makes much more money than I do - has spent several thousand dollars over the past five years on golf clubs, and about $100 over that same period of time on golf lessons. I find it ironic that so many people feel that an upgrade in equipment will fix their game, yet they ignore the glaring flaws in their swing.

By Dennis Chase, Traverse City Record Eagle It was a night to pay tribute to the Coast Guard. But it was an air force that stood out Thursday at Thirlby Field. Senior Scott Staal, making his first varsity start, completed 16 of 20 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns as Grand Haven won the inaugural Coast Guard Trophy with a season-opening 35-10 win over Traverse City Central. All four of Staal's touchdown passes went to Danny Cotter. Staal also ran for a score.

A year ago, Spring Lake scored a touchdown as time expired to beat Whitehall in the season-opener for both teams. On Thursday night, the Lakers looked poised for another dramatic win, but a costly interception by quarterback Keegan Wolter with just over a minute remaining helped the visiting Vikings hold on for a wild 33-31 win over the host Lakers at Thomas E. Grabinski Field.

As one of the top returning tailbacks in West Michigan, Fruitport senior Mike Reyes carries a bulls-eye on his back from opposing defenders. The bad news for Reeths-Puffer on Friday at Rocket Stadium was that Reyes proved he's a multi-dimensional threat and the Trojans are no one-trick pony.

Grand Haven's varsity volleyball team went 2-1 at its home quad on Thursday despite playing without setter Jami Hogeboom, who is out following a concussion. The Buccaneers defeated Fremont (25-16, 25-15) and Whitehall (25-22, 25-18) before falling to Mona Shores (25-16, 17-25, 15-10).

Spring Lake's varsity girls golf team scored a head-to-head win over Kenowa Hills on Thursday, shooting a 194 to the Knights' 199. Elinor Adams paced the Lakers with a round of 44, while freshman Karissa Raschke added a 49. Chezney Peel also shot a 49, and Tori Kihnke added a 52. The Lakers junior varsity squad lost to Kenowa Hills, 228-250. Low for Spring Lake was Samantha Lewakowski with a 59. BUCS TAKE 3RD Grand Haven placed third out of four teams at Thursday's Lakeshore Cup.

Tied at 7-7 with rival Reeths-Puffer entering the fourth quarter, Fruitport quickly turned the contest one-sided by scoring 21 points in the quarter en route to a 28-7 victory. Zack Goldman's 72-yard run on a toss sweep left -- keyed by an outstanding lead block by running back Mike Reyes -- started the Trojans' rally on the first play in the fourth quarter. The Trojans added touchdown runs by fullback Logan Six and back-up quarterback Tyler Fehler to blow the contest open. Goldman led the Trojans with 131 yards rushing on just nine carries.

The Grand Haven Buccaneers opened their 2011 season with a 35-10 win at Traverse City Central on Thursday night. Bucs quarterback Scott Staal threw four touchdown passes to Danny Cotter.
